If the freezer temps are normal and the refrigerator is warmer than normal, the the air flow from freezer to refrigerator is being hampered either by ice on the evaporator or the freezer is stuff in such a way that normal airflow between freezer and fridge is hampered. If the auto defrost is not working properly you will have warmer freezer temps and a relatively warm refridge. Check the defrost timer and defrost heater element.

SOURCE: KENMORE MODEL 596 BOTTOM FREEZER, FRIDGE NOT COOLING

The freezer will stay cold because a small amount of cold air will be forced through the frost but that will not be enough to make it up to the refrigerator portion. You can defrost the unit by removing the metal panel and allowing the frost to melt. Careful use of a hairdryer can speed up this process. This will likely be a temporary fix. The root cause of excessive frost can be caused by a bad door seal or a defective defrost circuit.

First check that the door seal is good by closing the door on a dollar bill at several points around the door, both on the freezer and refidgerator door. If you can pull the bill out with no resistance, the door is not making a good seal. Inspect the seal and make sure there isn't anything stopping the door from closing such as food, or a shelf not pushed in all the way.

If the door seal is good, the defrost system is likely defective. The defrost system has three main parts, the defrost heater, thermostat, and timer. None of these parts are particularly expensive, or difficult to replace you feel comfortable with repairing it yourself. If you can troubleshoot this by manually starting the defrost cycle. Let me know if you would like this procedure.

SOURCE: Kenmore Side by Side Freezer working fine, fridge is not cold

Hi, With the information you supplied i'm going to assume there is an ice build up at the rear of the freezer. Your problem is going to be with your defrost system. I will also assume you have the ability to repair this yourself. This is going to be one of three problems with your refridgerator, 1st thing to do is remove shelfs and panel in the back of the freezer...you should see ice build up on the evaporator...don't worry get a hair dryer and melt the ice. Next locate the wires for the heater...using a multi meter test the heater for condinuity...if the heater is bad replace it, If the heater is good replace the defrost thermostat..the stat normally is a barrel looking part clipped onto the evaporator pipe. The last possible problem could be the evaporator fan, have you heard the fan running in the past few hours?..if you are not sure pull the panel out to where you can see fan and watch it over an hour to see if it turns. I have included links with pictures of what the parts you need to check are: http://romulusappliance.com/manufacturers/maytag/refrigerators/575432.JPG defrost stat http://www.hotekalliance.com/UploadFiles/2008627111553382.jpg heaters http://www.applianceblog.com/archives/EvapMotor1018185.jpg evap fan. Hope this helps. If you have any other questions please feel free to comment again. If you decide to get a repair guy in should not cost you any more then $120 - $200 depending on make/model/problem Good luck! P.s please don't forget to rate my solution....Mike

SOURCE: Refrigerator will not stay cold

Eeeh, this will prevent you to spend more than you have. Carefully unplug your fridge, remove it from the wall for about 1 foot wait 15 mins and plug back and let it stay there for ever.

SOURCE: Kenmore side by side - Freezer cold Fridge warm

i've been manually defrosting my coils for over a year. (you can use the diagnostic mode to do this, instructions are in the papers wedged into the grill). got tired of it and just called service. they think it is the computer. i'm going to buy a replacement board online and repair it myself. hoping this works.

Kenmore Frost Free Comm. Model #253-23425100 - will not stay cold

Two things:

Either the thermostat has inadvertently been turned up, (too warm) or the gas in the compressor tank is low. If it isn't #1, call a repair tech to replentish the has in your compressor. If that isn't it he will tell you what he thinks it is. Good luck!

Freezer side cold, food side warm not working

3 possible problems.... Machine is possibly not defrosting (if this is it, eventually the freezer will not work as well) The damper between the two sides is possibly not operating, or the fan on the freezer side is possibly not blowing the cold air into the fresh food side.

Freezer works but refridgerator warm

you could find ice behind the back panel - worth a check. however the problem is probably ice in the return vent from fridge to freezer and the only way to cure is to switch off and leave for a day with doors open. if im right and you try this, if it re-occurs you may have a problem with the defrost system

Kenmore Side by Side Refrigerator, freezer doesn't work, refrigerator works

Unless specifically made for use in a garage most units won't work properly. The owners manual should say what the temp range for proper operation is (usually 55F is the low range). This is because the refrigerator section doesn't need to be "cooling" to maintain 37F if the temps on the outside are below 55F. These things are made to work in a 70F room and will not work properly if under 55F. Stupid thing thinks it's cold enough so it will never turn on, the refer section will stay cold/cool due to outside temps but since the compressor never runs the freezer will just be the same temp as the refer section (at best). Sorry, but in order for a freezer or refrigerator to work in an unheated space it must have the temp control device controling the freezer section NOT the fresh food section. In other words, that model will not work in a garage unless the temps are above 55F always.
