Excel 2007: Conditional formatting

I've created a worksheet using conditional formating to display Bold or Italics font depending on the cell values. Works fine until I incorporate that worksheet in a multi-sheet workbook where references are made to cells in other sheets. The conditional formats no longer operate after saving the workbook. Microsoft office displays a message "cannot apply conditional formats in linked worksheets". Is there a way around this problem?

Yes - gave names to cells in sheet1. Certain cells in sheet2 were set equal to these named cells and conditional formats applied using "cell value is..." Appeared to work OK but after saving and reopening formats didn't appear to act. Problem seems to be related to having linked sheets because works OK with only one sheet in the workbook.

Did you put the sheet name in your reference? ex =Sheet2!A1 or you can name the cell ranges on the other sheets and use the cell names in your conditional formatting formla.

IS THERE A FORMULA IN EXCEL THAT WILL HIGHLIGHT CELLS THAT MATCH A NUMERICAL INVENTORY LIST?

One way would be to create a colunn C and use the formula: =COUNTIF(B$2:B$200,A2) in cell C2. Then copy the formula down to C200. (assuming you have 200 entries in B...). This will put a "1" next to every number in Column A that has a match in column B. Then you could put a conditional formula in column A that will highlight the cell if the value in column C is equal to 1. Alternatively you could also simply filter for 1's in column C and then manually highlight the cells that show up in A!

Conditional formating to highlight problems.

in Excel 2007 and if you have a cell (say C2) with the value of elapsed time (for example set = A2 which contains start time plus B2 which contains end time - or current time) - click in the cell (C2) then on the Home tab click on Styles >> Conditional formatting choose Highlight Cells Rules>>Greater Than... set your value in the dialog to your respective value and choose your highlight. This is a start - you can then add new rules.

to then apply this same conditional formatting to every cell in that column Ctrl-C to copy the cell you just formatted - then click on the column header to highlght the entire column - Right-click and choose Paste Special - then choose Formatting for what to paste.

It's slightly different in Excel 2003 so let us know what version you are using.

Cheers.

You may be able to set the cell styles for every workbook/worksheet. Take and re-format your exported spreadsheet the way you would like it to look, then highlight those cells and poke through the menus until you find the cell formatting options (I don't use Works that much, so I'm not sure of the actual menu path) and see if there is an option for formatting those cells in that manner as a general default cell format.

Excel see a cells format as having four Sections. These are, from left to right: Positives;Negatives;Zeros;Text.

To hide zeros cell-by-cell use a Custom Number Format like 0.00;-0.00; where 0.00 is desired format for non zeros. Note the use of -0.00 for negatives.

To hide zeros on the Workbook level go to Tools>Options>View - Zero Values.

Conditional formatting

Go down to the section about highlighting where there's an error. That's the basics of what you want to do. Now you need the code:

This will set a value of "True" if the string is -not- found inside. So if you want to flag it for finding the word NOT, you want the conditional formatting to kick in if the value of this is FALSE.
=iserr(find("NOT",A1))

Forgot password to open Excel sheet

If you mean that you can open the Workbook and read the Worksheet - then all you have to do is select all and paste it to another Worksheet. This will allow for changes of formulas etc.

If you mean the whole Workbook - then I dunno.

In future, either use the same password for everything (easy to remember) or Protect the work with nothing entered into the password field (leave this blank). This last will protect the work from people who try to guess your password, but will be easy for you to remember - eg every password is left blank.

If you must use unique passwords, then keep a record of them somewhere other than on your computer.

Sorry I can't help with the "Workbook" solution - but somebody else out ther may be able to do so.
