There should be a tensioning screw that needs to be backed off to allow the bar to be moved towards the back of the saw. I am not sure on your saw if the screw is on the cover or on the saw side of the bar. So start by taking off the cover over the bar then you will see the tension adjusing screw. On the screw will be a peg that fits into a hole in the bar. Turn the screw so the peg moves towards the sprocket. When the bar is far enough back you can place the chain over the bar and sprocket. Then with the peg in the bar put the cover back on and turn the screw to move the bar forward till the chain is snug. If it is too tight the chain will not move around the bar. With gloves on you should be able to move the chain around the bar. If you can not it is too tight. Back off the adjusting screw till you can then fully tighten the cover screws.

Remove the cover on the right hand side of the saw and remove the bar and chain. Clean the oil port holes in the bar and the body of the saw. They get clogged with sawdust and chips. Also clean the groove in the bar and the sprocket at the end of the bar. Always use proper chainsaw bar oil.

  • Unloosen the bts on the chain cover, remove the cover, loosen the bar for some slack, reposition the chain and reverse the opertaion. Be sure the teeth are going in the correct direction. Tight the chain so a dime will just slip under the chain itself.

No local Ryobi dealer; what other brand chains will fit my 18" Ryobi ?

Any saw service dealer can fit a chain to your saw. 'Oregon' saw makes bars/chains for about any saw made in the last 50 years or so. Just take the chain itself in to get a replacement. Good luck!

loosen the two nuts that hold the chain cover on. Once they are just loose, then use a flat blade screw driver to turn the slot that you see right next to the base of the chain. Once the chain is tight, retighten the two nuts.
