Hi, There are three parts to the slef defrosting cycle. With a model #, I could help you locate each part and help you on testing each part.

Hi,

if the compressor is running your ref. should be getting cold. Their is a defrost timer but when it is in defrost the compressor shuts off. I think you do have a leak.

thanks,

Freezer goes through a cycle and get warm. The ice will start melting and create a mess when the freezer start to cool agian. Temperture in frig and freezer does not hold cool.

Unplug, empty, clean and let set for 24 hours to defrost the cooling coil that is froze solid overwhelming the heater and not letting it work. if the air can't circulate it will not cool. Check door gasket, or tell kids to stop holding the door open as this will cause it to frost up and cause the problem you're having.. Trust me, It works.

The refrigrator does not get cold or freeze

Check at the back of your freezer panel for excess icing / frosting this will affet proper cooling - if so, then you have a defrost problem - have it serviced - if no excess frosting and defrosting normally, and freezer is normal, then you might have a damper problem, not opening wide enough . have them check your control boards, defrost timer, and damper (if any)

Freezer is "frosting over...refrig part not cooling????

it sounds like the defrost system is not operating and getting rid of the frost. the common fault is that the defrost heater has gone, or the heater cut out has gone or the defrost timer is faulty. how is the door seal in the area- that can cause frosting with warm air ingress.

Frig won't cool, freezer works fine

Defrost unit completely. You're frosting up. Then, avoid leaving the door open, leaving liquids and food uncovered. Clean condenser coils. If it happens again, you need refrigerant.
