Usually the supply and return lines are a different size. If not, you'll have to do some detective work. One would hope that wire code colors would be faithful to polarity, or at least keep black for ground.

Didn't mention the year. Newer ones have pumps in both tanks. Older ones have the pump on the engine. Most likely is the switch on the frame. drivers side about mid ways. Replaced a lot of them.

1983 Ford coachman rv

1983 still had a carburetor. Thus, a manual fuel pump, driven by the engine. Located towards the front down low. 2 bolts, 2 lines. No pump in the tank.

I would check the fuel filter first, before changing the pump. Located somewhere inline between the tank and carb. Some carbs had a 2nd one at the fuel inlet.

Remote possibility of clogged fuel line. Can be blown out with compressed air.

Check the oil level and smell for gas. A ruptured fuel pump diaphram will pump gas into the engine. Noticeable by gas smell on dipstick and higher than normal oil level.

Installed new fuel pump. pump turns on with key but does not send fuel

Try changing the fuel filter, then VERIFY that there is fuel pressure or not, at the fuel rails. If you have pressure and engine still wont start, problem is elsewhere. Perhaps the system has air trapped in it still. Did you add at least 5 GALLONS of gas to the tank? Some tank baffles wont let one or two gallons reach the pump, unless the vehicle is moving.

If you do NOT have pressure at the rails, check the following:
Are the hoses from the tank connected correctly to the body lines?
Did you install the hose and clamps(if required) from the pump to the same line the old pump was connected to? You can disconnect the inlet side of the fuel filter, and then turn the key on for split second. If the pump is pumping fuel and connected inside the tank correctly it will spray a bit. You can put an empty water bottle over the end of the line, just tape or wire it on so it wont shoot off.
Was there a cap or plug left on the intake(bottom) of pump?

It could also be the new pump. I know you dont want to hear some of these things, but it happens.
You would not be the first person to get and install a bad pump. Fuel pumps, Ignition parts, and electrical parts, and most brake parts should be obtained at a dealership. Yes they cost more but, they work!

I need to change the fuel pump on a 2004 vw tauregcould you point me in the right direction

The pumps are located under the rear seats. Fold them forward and look at the carpet. There are perforated - cut the carpet. Use a brass punch to gain access to the pumps. It's best to have the fuel tank as low as possible. You will have to access both side pumps to connect and disconnect them. The most complicated part is connecting all the gas lines. I removed both pumps first then tried to install both the next day. I would recommend changing one at a time, this way you have all the correcting lines in front of you, you will see what I mean once you get there.

Check first if you get 11.5v out to the pumps.

Fuel sensor does'nt register properly on the cluster, replacement of fuel level sensor procedure

the fuel sending unit is inside the fuel tank and is part of the fuel pump module, you either have to remove the fuel tank and then turn the fuel pump module locking ring to release the pump unit, and replace the in tire unit you may have to replace the wiring plug end most of the older pumps have been replaced by a newer style pump that uses a newer style plug, or you can remove the bed to get access to the fuel tank.....HAVE FUN

Fuel is being pushed from Front tank to rear tank until it is empty and then wont start off front tank or rear tank and have to put gas into front tank to restart truck

ford had a recall for this in 88-89. the recall was for a defective changeover valve mounted on the drivers frame rail. check to see if it has a small galvanized valve or the larger black one. if it still has the black one. its a bad valve. return from pump is pumpingf fuel to the oposite tank. go to a junk yard and find one with the newer valve is your best bet. or use on tank like i am. i disconnected my rear tank. still have,nt figured out how to wire my gas guage though. hope this helps someone.

Jet Pump stops after three starts of 20 minutes each and it doesnt want to start back again until the next day or after a few hours

check motor with hand after it stops for excessive heat. Thermo coupler shuts motor off if overheating, to protect windings. Bad motor bearing can cause overheating, if so should hear bearing noise when running.
Also check start capacitor, by removing and checking with ohm meter, or plug in oposite terminals of capacitor to charge. Place rubber glove on hand, and contact two oposite terminals with screwdriver should produce a small spark.

Fuel filters is where

It's located about the center of the van and about 2 feet in front of the tank, It has three lines coming out of it. Two going to the rear to the tank and one to the front. Be sure to tell the parts man what body style the van is when you ask for one because the long van ( Grand) uses longer lines. The round thing at the top of the tank itself is NOT a filter, but a vapor separator. There's nothing inside it. You may have to loosen the tank straps some to drop the tank a little to disconnect the lines on top of the tank. Be careful, the lines will have pressure. I always pull the relay in the fuse box under the hood that's marked 'fuel pump' while the van is running and let it run out of gas before changing the filter. Even then you will get some pressure
