Old zenith intermittent power on problem

I have an old Zenith tv, which I've had for about 15 or so years.  All of a sudden, when I plug it in (the switch has been broken for about a year), it would not come on, no sound, picture, nothing.

Now, it comes on about once every week or tow, it works perfectly.  The rest of the time, either it makes a sound, but no picture or it makes no sound and no light on the screen whatsoever.

What could it be?  Is it worth fixing?

Re: old zenith intermittent power on problem

I'm going to guess that you have an old zenith color console. And it could be any number of models. I would suspect one of the most common problem in this set would be a 35volt 100mf cap that is bad. Location would be near the powerline regulator. Replace it and there should be another cap near that one, I cannot remember its value at this time. And always suspect those caps with values 160olts or 250 volts with mf of 1, 2.2 , and 4.7. Generally speaking this will correct many many zeniths. And to ad to your frustrations the picture tube in zeniths go bad at the same time. It is in your best interest to buy another tv. If you may....paint the entire tv gray and place it at Carhenge. We may like to view it!

I have a 15 year old Zenith console, SL2737RK, lost vertical defl

You need to resolder the vertical IC and replace any electrolytic caps in the same immediate area. If you can find someone with electronics experience they know what I'm saying....It can be repaired.

Zenith TV has no place for yellow, red, white composite plugs

This TV doesn't have an AV input, so there are no input jacks other than the antenna connector. If you want to connect a device that has only AV outputs (your red, white and yellow plug) you will need an RF converter. This will take the AV signals and convert them to a channel 3 or 4 signal you can tune in on the set.

But since you don't seem interested in spending any money, you'll probably not like to hear that the converter runs around $15 most places. Take heart, there is an alternative. Find a VCR (if you don't have one already) that has an RF output. Many of the the newer DVD/VCR combos only have AV outputs. You're looking for one that has an "out to TV" threaded connector on the back. These units already have an RF converter built in. Connect your AV plugs to the line in jacks on the VCR and switch to that input, and you can use your video game or DVD player through the VCR.

My tv will only display ch. 2 my little 5 yr. old was playing with the settings it is a 15 yr. old zenith tv

Depending on your market, it sounds like all of the other analogue channels have been terminated (not your son's fault) in order to provide stronger HD signals. You may need to run to wallmart and get that $50 decoder box.

16 yr old 25" Zenith..1st colors went yellow/lime now TV is dead

Absolutely not worth repair. You have described a classic symptom of Zenith picture tube failure, and about 99% of the time the main board in the TV is ruined as well. You've gotten good life from the set (manufacturers figure tube life is around 7 years these days), so it's time to replace it.

Zenith 27" TV

I sorry to say I think you have a component failing that is related to heat. 15 years is a long time and if the TV was used in hpot conditions over the years it may well be the proble, or it's just old.

Tv blew up

sounds like the typical power supply or sweep problem in the zenith chassis. depending on how old this set is will determin if its even worth trouble shooting or taking it in to be looked at by a pro. If your not experienced with tv repair i would call a repair shop or take it in as tv sets have high voltage stored in them even after they have been unplugged for a while. If youve tinkered with tvs in the past or know someone who does zenith tvs are made for a complete chassis exchange. you can Call PTS Corp at 1 800 844 7872 and see how much an exchanged referbished chassis would cost and go from there. Good Luck
