Cooling systems can have bubbles that take time to move out. Usually the expansion tank can handle them, and hold enough coolant for the first warm up. Run the motor until it warms up and then turn it off. Let it settle a minute and then check the coolant level in the tank. Add to the fill line with coolant. Do not remove the cap on the radiator. When the motor is running again, and warmed up to operating temp, check the level in the expansion tank. Top off if necessary, but not full to the brim, there will be a fill line on the tank.

1998 Cadillac Catera can't tell if it is the engine oil cooler or a headgasket but oil is mixing with coolant and coolant and oil, what would be a sign if it is engine oil cooler

If you have a head gasket problem, you should see dense white smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe if you have antifreeze (ethylene glycol) in the cooling system, especially right after starting the engine.

Is it Oil,or Automatic transmission fluid?
I've changed several Catera Radiator's because the transmission cooler cracked inside of them!!
Better check the transmission fluid for engine coolant too,Coolant in the Automatic Transmission will kill it purdy Quick!

Where are the hoses that run to radiator to cooling system located? send diagram. Oil went into water tank on 1998 cadillac catera

I don't have a diagram, but your problem is the oil cooler underneath the intake on top of the engine. Remove the intake, and the cooler is right there in between the heads. Easy to change once you get the intake off. This is a VERY common problem on Cateras, and the symptom of it is oil in your coolant. I have a 1998 Catera and had the same issue.

I own a 98 cadillac catera and

First check for any leakage from your radiator, hoses or overflow tank.

If it were a freeze plug you'd not be able to miss the puddling spillage. Where if it were a head gasket the coolant and fuel / oil would mix and you'd be driving a mobile smoke generator { very noticeable while smoke }

If you can't see the leak take it in for a coolant system pressure test. Which will pinpoint where your vehicle is losing coolant.

2001 cadillac catera: oil in coolant?

The Problem, My friend, is a leaking oil cooler. this item is mounted, inside the engine, under the intake manifold. The cooler or the connections are bad. Coolant flows through the cooler, if it brakes then the oil will contaminate your coolant and make a mess.!! Have it checked. Must times is the seals at the pipe to cooler flange connector. will need new seals.. Hope this helps.
