This really depends on the make and model of the TV you are referring to. More than likely one or both of two things are happening. 1) There is a fan out causing the TV to get too hot and a safety switch is shutting it down to protect the TV from further damage. Or. 20 there is a bad safety switch telling the TV has an issue when it really does not. Another thing that could be going on .... It seems modern TVs have a tendency to burn out capacitors and bad capacitors will cause this behavior as well.
Your best bet is to use Google to search for common problems with your specific brand and model of TV. Also look for flashing lights on the front of the TV that may be blinking in patterns, these patterns may tell you what the problem is. ie; 3 blinks bad fan or 4 blinks bulb not seated properly etc.
