This flashes on the screen and the camera will not record or play. There is a website, camerahacker.com, where over 500 people have fixed this by smacking the camera! Didn't work on mine. When I opened the cassete area, a small black roller fell out! No idea if this was my problem all along or happened when I smacked the camera, but bottom line is I don't know where it goes in the camcorder. Does anyone know where I can gt a picture of the innards of this thing so maybe I could see where it goes? Any help greatly appreciated!
Have had exactly the same problem. Whacking the camera did not work and a roller has also fallen out, Did you manage to fix it ?. This camera cost loads when I bought it in dec 2002, wonder if it is worth fixing.

Hi Jazzy, Please see the detail below for the said error codes C31:23.
to the symptom and self diagnostic system the problem is in mechanical
section (tape loading section) Therefore camera just need mechanical
adjustment and will work fine again. This problem aries when the
insertion of the cassette is improper or forced insertion. Thanks for using fixya.

Your playback heads might be clogged. I am not sure if this camera with give you a RF warning if your record heads get clogged. Also most professional machines drums are rated at 1000 - 1500 hours before they need to be replaced. If you are at 500 and never cleaned the heads it is time to. Run a cleaning tape a few times.
Look at my most recent post about this, or better yet, go to camerahacker.com to see many possible solutions plus diagrams and actual pictures. You'll have to scroll down about 60 pages or so, ther are over 2,000 complaints about this error code alone on just this one website!
YOu may be missing the roller, the white plastic lock or both. Turn the camera upside down, remove the tape and gently shake it and see if anything comes out.
Re-install per the directions on that website. If not sure what to do and you find the parts, post here again and I'll try to help you. good luck! BOYCOTT SONY!!!!!
Take the battery out and turn selection switch to camera and then turn it off. Put the battery back in and its working again.
if that doesn't work try
Try smacking the side of the camera relatively hard with the palm of your hand. Eject the tape and reinsert. You may need to do this a couple of times.
