To Block the Access to certain links

Is there any way to block access to certain sites to my computer. For instance, if I wish to block the site 'Facebook', can I do it? There are four of us using this computer, and I'm the administrator. The operating system is Windows SP SP-3, and the browser uses is Google Chrome. Is there any way to block access to Facebook, to all four of us? Can I? If so how?

Yes. using a simple text editor like notepad simply add entries to the file:
c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

the entries should look like this:
127.0.0.1 www.siteiwantblocked.com
that IP address is the "localhost" and will result in and error or if the computer is running a web server it will go to that site.

Hi Kershk - I really do appreciate the solution you posted here for the problem I've posted here by Fixya. But, there is a little confusion. Just understand, I'm nothing in terms of software. I really do got some idea about how to block a site from accessing; by your solution. If you provide some more details, I'll be grateful to you. "I really want to block the site 'Facebook' only. Will you please give me some directions about how can I do it? Please give me some details about the steps I should do. If this comment window doesn't allow you to provide all details, please send these directions by my email. gopakumarg43@outlook.com

this is a fairly straight forward fix. open notepad, open the file c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts, at the end add the line 127.0.0.1 facebook.com, save the file, reboot. do this for any system you want to block. add lines in a similar fashion for other sites. that file, the hosts file, contains its own instructions, have a look

SOURCE: Certain Sites hang and don't load to browser on one computer but does on another

Now many web sites use flash player for their add content as well as for the menu content. if you have not installed flash player these sites will just show loading but will not load. more over what happens is the site will check whether your sys has the app installed atherwise it will prompt you to install with an yellow information bar. Once you install this the site loads as usual. The problem is when you have a slow internet connection the site is not able to check your sys for prompting you to install the required app. thus the site hangs. Check if you have installed adobe flash player activex 9 player.

SOURCE: Certificate error on web site.

This is basically an Internet Explorer 7 Website’s Security Certificate problem! You have to self-sign the certificate on the client computer or add the URL manually to the trusted security zone. When you are trying to access a secure web page, you receive the warning message:

"There is a problem with this website's security certificate. The security certificate presented by this website was not issued by a trusted certificate authority."

Or

"Security certificate problems may indicate an attempt to fool you or intercept data you send to the server."

To fix this issue, you can follow either of the methods:

  • In Windows Internet Explorer 7, click Continue to this website (not recommended).
A red Address Bar and a certificate warning appear.
  • Click Certificate Error button to open the information window.
  • Click View Certificates > click Install Certificate.
  • Click Yes, to install the certificate, when warning message appear.

Note: For Windows Vista users, right click on Internet Explorer icon. Select Run as Administrator.

Method 2:

Add the URL to the Trusted Sites security zone:

  • Open Internet Explorer
  • Go to Menu bar > Tools > Internet Options.

    tool.jpg
  • Click Security > Trusted sites > Sites

    sec.jpg
  • Type the URL in the Add this website to the zone text box > uncheck Require server verification >Add > click OK

    trust.jpg
  • Click OK to exit.

I want to unblock my badoo and facebook site om my pc

Step 1:
Block and unblock internet sites using your macintosh computer. It is easy to set up, and easy to change. Follow these steps to determine what type of blocking you want to use, how to set it up, and how to unblock sites in the future.

DECIDE WHAT YOUR GOAL REALLY IS IN BLOCKING SITES. Be clear about this up front so you can find the best solution. Is this blocking for you? Is it for your kids? Is it to keep employees off of certain sites? Answer these questions first before stabbing in the blocking-sites-darkness. To block certain types of sites for all users on a computer or system - use OpenDNS.com, see step 2.

To block specific sites one at a time use the terminal command in Step 3.
To log (rather than block) specific sites use covenanteyes.com see Step 4.
To only ALLOW certain sites use the parental controls option, see Step 5. USE FREE OPEN DNS TO BLOCK CERTAIN TYPES OF SITES FOR ALL USERS. This is a great option for small businesses or households with agreed upon and uniform standards for internet usage. See the link Below. http://opendns.com/ Go to the site (see resource link near the bottom of this page). Click on the 'start using open dns' button. Choose whether you want the blocking to occur at the computer level, the router level, or the server level. Follow the step by step instructions. They have pictures... it really is simple. Best of all, it is FREE! b> TO BLOCK SPECIFIC SITES USE THE TERMINAL COMMAND IN MACOSX TO BLOCK THEM ONE AT A TIME. Few people really want to block only one or two sites. This is a wieldy way to provide internet security. But if that is your specific need this is for you. Another ehow article gives the detailed instructions (it's a bit technical) for this process. So it is linked both in the related articles to the right titled 'How to block access to websites in MacOS X' and in the resource link section at the bottom. TO LOG EVERYTHING YOUR COMPUTERS VIEW, USE COVENANT EYES. This program will log and score every site that is viewed by a computer on which it is installed. It will not allow the internet to run if it is disabled and will send you an alert if it is uninstalled. You set the preferences as to how often to receive reports. Go to covenanteyes.com and click the 'sign up now' button. It will guide you through the process. For around $8 a month this is a relatively cheap option that covers up to three computers. TO ONLY ALLOW CERTAIN SITES USE PARENTAL CONTROLS. If you are using the Leopard system then you can use the 'Parental Controls' feature found in System Preferences. Click on accounts. Check the box for parental controls. You can click on the content tab and then tick limit access to adult sites. You can also use button to add specific criteria to your block. Alternatively, simply add the specific sites you want allowed to the bookmark bar and type in your administrator's password. Then only those sites can be viewed. TO UNBLOCK SITES ON A MAC. To remove parental controls simply return to the systems preference, accounts, then parental controls section. Un-click the parental control box. Un-click any content specific controls. To remove open dns.com simply drag the program folder from applications into the trash. Isn't Mac great?

If you worked at the router or server level you will have to undo those steps and reconfigure your system to allow direct access to the internet. To uninstall covenant eyes you need the password to get an uninstall code. It cannot happen late at night.

Access your router via the built in configuration page, default is http://192.168.1.1. I'm assuming you're the administrator; If not, contact him/her. At the top of the window, select the "Access Restrictions" tab. The policies will be listed and can be modified.

Blocked Services: You may choose to block access to certain services. Click Add/Edit Services to modify these settings.

Website Blocking by URL: You can block access to certain websites by entering their URL.

Website Blocking by Keyword: You can block access to certain website by the keywords contained in their webpage.

Hello our company block tagged and facebook. Can you please help me on how can I access these sites. Thanks

A lot of people run into this problem. I myself have had to go about solving this!
Many schools and workplaces do have the ability to block certain websites (such as Facebook)
Simple solution! There are Proxy servers, which you can use to access whatever website you desire, regardless of what's blocked.
This website is free and serves the same purpose! Just type in Facebook or whatever link in the box and you can simply access it: http://freeproxyserver.net/
This site is more legitimate and provides a quick and simple solution, but does come with a bit of a cost: http://hidemyass.com/ (please disregard the name)
Hope this works! Best of luck.

How can i block certain website (mostely the torrent site)parentally. And prevent from downloading the torrent PERMANENTLY.

I use TrendMicro (about $40/year for three machines). You have decent parental control with it. You may also use "Resticted Sites" settings in Internet Explorer but it may not be as secure for you. The TrendMicro software requires a password to allow settings to be changed...not sure about IE.
