Question about Toro Lawn Mower With Toro Power Tools

1 Answer

No drive Rear wheels on Toro mod#20622 21" bag walk behind mower will not stay in place. Height adjustment levers that are made of spring steel are no longer in their proper shape and rear wheels just "flop" out of control. Also, the rear drive axle seems to slip from side to side aprox. 7/8". Are there replacement parts for this mower? I could also use schematic drawings of the rear assembly. Thanks

Front wheels on manual mower lock when pushing for awhile.

1 Locate the height adjustment lever on the inside of the left rear wheel.
2 Kneel next to the mower and push the left height adjustment lever toward the center of the mower. This will unlock the lever from the locking pin on which the height is currently set.

3Rotate the lever toward the front of the mower to lower the height of cut, or toward the rear of the mower to raise the height of cut.

4 Release the lever over the locking pin closest to the desired height of cut.

5 Repeat these steps with the adjustment lever on the right-side rear wheel. Be sure to set the right wheel lever to the same position as the left-side wheel's lever for an even cut.

I have a self propelled Toro walk behind that does not have a throttle control. Stalls out if grass is just a bit high. How/ where do I adjust throttle

Most new mowers do not have a throttle adjustment, the motor has a govnor that helps the motor speed up when the load requires it. The first thing you should check is that the blade is sharp which makes it easier to cut the grass. If the grass is still too high for the motor to keep up, it's usually easier to raise the deck (lower the wheels) so you are not cutting as much grass on each pass. Then lower the deck to where you want the grass height to be and make a second pass.

Have a recycler rear bagger...I cannot keep the bag clipped on, pops off usually on the right side as you stand behind the mower. I try and keep the grass from building under the "slot" but...

I can't figure out the remedy either. Very annoying. Replaced the rear door spring, but that didn't help. I even thought the bag wasn't breathing, so I flushed it with the hose.....No cigar! Any other thoughts?

Having trouble with the drive train on my TORO walk behind MOD. 20018

This is from a service note in shop:

"SUBJECT: Self-propelled system locks up or does not work properly. If pushed the wheels will not roll. (may be accompanied by grinding or clicking)

SITUATION: Inadequate lubrication results in the key or drive pinion sticking.
CORRECTION: Remove the drive wheel, clip ring, thrust washer, pinion, key and spring. Clean any lubricant or rust from the parts. Lubricate generously with anti-seize and reassemble.
Note: More information regarding the service of this drive system is in the Walk Power Mower Drive Systems Service Manual, Form #492-4733.

Beginning in April of 2002 Toro began making changes in their production process to ensure proper lubrication. This was done in several steps, each has improved the situation. Please remind your customers that lubrication of the wheel pinion clutch is part of normal maintenance and is covered in the owner's manual. Three to four drops of engine oil on each side of the pinion is required every 25 hours, or at least once a year.

parts for this unit can be looked up at www.arcolawn.com
good luck

The motion control levers became tight to move and

You may have some bent or out of adjustment linkages, causing the brakes to stay on.
Or the friction nut (one on each transmission) is too tight. These are located just in front of the axel, they go through a slot, the washer behind the nut should turn freely

Toro 22in Lawn mower. Loud gear noise when try to engage drive.

Problem is in the rear pinion gears on rear axle and the design of the axle itself. I have a 2005 model 20041 had the same problem. I found a Toro dealer that had the fix.The problem is creadted by the fact that there is too much "play" in the rear axle. You have to limit that play by installing shims, or washers First, but the 2 new rear pinion gears for the rear axle. While you're at it, you may as well buy 2 new rear wheels because the "grinding" has worn the sprockets on the reas r wheels.Next, get 2 "fender washers", 1/2" ID and about 1" OD. I found it easier to turn the mower over and set it on saw horses to work on it.( drain the gas and oil first). Remove both rear wheels, pinion gears and all the washers etc. (caution - keep all parts from one side together - do not pile all parts together - keep them seperated by wheel - the reason is I believe there is one more washer/shim on the right side than on the left). Now to put everything back together, find a spot on the axle where the washer will fit in between the standard stuff.Install new pinion gears and replace the rest of the washers/shims just as they came off. INstall new wheels and you'll be good as new!
