Re: Modem

To access the ports you mean via the control panel.  If it is an internal modem then XP would automatically install it as a hardware providing it is connected to the motherboard.  I detected you saying that you rebuilt the PC.  Have you slotted an internal modem into one of the periferal slots or did it use an external modem.  Did you know you dont need a modem to logon to the net unless your dialing up? But if you use broadband most use an external modem that connects fast ethernet connection.  But I suppose you know this after all you rebuilt the machine.

My dad gave my son an elderly (2001) HP Pavilion xf145 notebook with windows xp. We can't figure out if we need to add a wifi card of some sort, if it can even connect to our wifi or what. It seems to...

You can use either external wifi modem and connect it to the notebook by ethernet cable or (better) use PCMCIA wifi card (second-hand e.g. from eBay?) or wifi usb modem connected direct to usb port. Just check if choosen wifi modem supports your OS WIN XP (and service pack - e.g. WIN XP SP3). In the Reference guide of the notebook is not specified USB version - it seems to be v. 1.0, so it is necessary to get an USB wifi modem compatible with USB 1.0 standard.

Can I use my current Bigpond 7.2 wireless modem stick with a new laptop?

You can use any wireless modem stick if your wireless modem can connect to the stick it has to be for your particular modem. Make sure that the stick is compatible with the Operating System you are currently using for Win XP or otherwise, the drivers are loaded and make sure that the firewall settings are on for your devices to access inbound and outbound conformities. This should be a simple plug and play situation.
Turn off the computer and your modem place the stick in the port you wish to use. Then place the driver disc in the DVD or CD ROM whichever you have to install the driver with most likely it will be in the stick the software for it and it should auto-run. Then turn on everything, wait for a bit for the works to settle in. The search the Internet using IE8 if it does not find the internet it will open a window asking you if you want IE to diagnose connection problems. It should repair it. If this will not work then you will want to go to and type in for the username without the quotes, "admin" and the password, "admin"
This will be the default page for your wireless connection you should see all the Bigpond configurations. Click on reset the modem your IP should be Dynamic automatically your ISP will install the configurations needed. The reset button is located on the modem use a toothpick push the little button in for about 15 seconds this should get you up and going. I hope that this gave you some sort of an idea on what is going on. Thanks for using FixYa! Do not forget to post a vote if I assisted you in any way, Thanks John

I have recently bought an EPC netbook, internet problems

3 mobile are correct. You cannot use the USB modem dongle that 3 supply to access the internet. That dongle requires application software to allow internet programs to access the port and so access the modem in the dongle. Windows CE does not allow this access. Find out which modem chip is in the dongle and google the name of the chip, this should lead you to a driver which you can use through CE although you may have to reconfigure the 3 dongle..

Connexant Modem, Sigmatel Sound and USB fail to work or install

I had the same problem with a dell m1330. Dell did not provide the xp drivers. I used various programs to identify hardware and then try to hunt them down on the internet. I finally gave up and bought driver scanner from uniblue for $30. Solved all my problems. It also sounds like your chipset driver maybe the wrong one. Also you can download "PCWizard" it will tell you the details you need to know to find the correct drivers.

Modems not detected with Windows XP install

According to the specs this is the driver (Toshiba Software Modem) you need to install to enable your modem.

Post your results, especially if this doesn't fix your problem.

No sound in aspire 5315

- I guess you downgraded your system to windows xp, If that the case you have to check if the system has an internal modem .If so, please download the driver for that PCI modem.

- I have already checked the modem that was already install on your system(V.92 56Kbps* data/fax modem,)
- You have to download the windows xp driver for this modem. or download chipset driver for windows xp

Cannot Find My Modem

If your talking about a internal modem on your pc follow this:
Right click My computer>properties>hardware>device manager>check now if you can see anything about a modem that is not installed properly, if that's the case you just need to reinstall the driver for it.
