Question about Hotpoint Refrigerators
Everything on top shelf of fridge freezes
You should send model number,if you have a damper control in your model most likely this is the problem, all that happens is cold air blows over from the freezer from the evaporator fan and blows through the top section of the fridge side,if the damper door isn't closing all the way it will cause freezing in the fridge section.

Is everything really frozen or just the top shelf stuff? You may have a thermistor (temp sensor) problem if the compressor just runs and runs and runs all the time. Take a glass of water and place a thermometer in it for about 3 hours then take a temp. reading. That will let you know what the real temps are. See if you can cause the compressor to kick off and on by changing the temp settings (go to real low for about 5 minutes then back up to high). Let us know what happens.

The defrost timer in the unit is probably bad take a look at it there should be a timer with a slot in it around the thermostat that you can turn with a common screwdriver the timer should click and go into defrost mode and the unit should shut off, if the unit shuts off and it still doesn't defrost you either have a thermal cut-out that is bad in the freezer next to the heater element or the heater element itself is bad. Let us know :-)

well..that's most likely due to a problem with the relationship between the control and the compressor.
is your unit under warranty?

meaning you have a uncontrolled compressor it run continuously without monitoring the temperature, The Temperature control or Thermo control switch. will switch ON the Comp. untill the preset temp. is obtain then Sw. OFF if the temp is out of preset value.

The fridge gets its cold air from the freezer through a vent(damper)
between the freezer and fridge. The fan in the freezer blows air through
it. There is a flap you adjust with the
fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the
fridge temp ..
