Question about Brother XL-3500

1 Answer

Is the Brother SE 350 made of plastic gears?

I like the price of the SE 350, however, our local dealer is telling me that the unit is made of plastic gears and it won't last long. His suggestion is to buy a more expensive unit which is more that twice the price of the Brother 350. The other unit is the Brother Innovis 900D. Which do you recommend?

Hi, For the most part, any machine that has plastic gears is doomed at a chance for long life because if the gears break and can not be replaced, they don't glue together well. But I have machines that have both metal and plastic gears and the are still going after 10 + years. If you love to sew and take care of the machine, they will reward you with a longer life than expected. It sounds like the dealer just wants you to spend more money. Buy what you are comfortable with don't let them try to sell you something you won't like afterwards.

I am thinking of acquiring a second hand brother xl computerised sewer. Are they good machines

Brother machines are so basic and general that if you purchase a pre-owned one, you will be having to take it to the repair center shortly. Really. But if you are just an every now & again sewer, or just want to learn? Then a good price on a Brother machine may not be too bad of an idea or purchase - Key Word = Good Price. Well I guess 2 words.
Here is a hint*** - Go to your local sewing center, any local sewing center! Not a Joannes or the sewing dept of your local big box dept store, but a Real sewing center. You will find that they carry One Brand maybe two of the big name brand. And that is because they are the "Authorized" dealer for that Name Brand. Some will be BabyLock, Others Viking Husqvarna, and yet others Pfaff or Janome. These are the High Quality Name brand machines. You can find Singer & Brother at Wal-Mart and Target! Go to a couple of them that are the "Dealer" for different names. But what you are going to look for is their "Pre-Owned" Machines!!! Take Notice: How many Brothers will you see? Probably not much! If at all! So, after you did this little experiment. Make / Take a look at your budget... then get a good beginners Pfaff or Janome. Price wise - Slightly higher but not much and you will be ALL the happier and wiser for this choice.
Good Luck

You may need a shank adapter. Most dealers have them available.

The safety device has beenactivated. SE-400

That means that there is no rotation in the main motor and assuming that the hand wheel moves when you turn it by hand, its likely the motor has a serious problem.
I advise you to take it to your local Brother dealer for repair.

Brother SE-350 "The safety device has been activated"

Return the bobbin winding shaft on the top right of the machine to the Left Position. It may be stuck in the middle.
I had this same problem. After an hour or two of fiddling, this fixed my problem.
