WD My Book Essential keeps asking me to format

Hi,

Got this external hard rive.  It was working fine until both my computers crashed.  I bought a new one and was able to salvage the other one.  Tried plugging it again to the old computer and it keeps asking me to format the drive, which I do not want to do because of all the datas I have there.  Tried installing it to the new system and same thing.  What am I doing wrong?

Thanks

AG

My fairly new MY BOOK WD that I just transfered all our digital pictures onto is asking to be formatted.  Original computer transfered from has XP but I tried our laptop with Vista and it didnt help any.  How can I get to those pictures?????

Hi,

There are two main reasons why this could be happening. Vista will ask you to scan/format any portable or flash drive the first time you plug it in as it prefers you use it's newer version of NTFS but it's not required. If this is the case there is an option on that pop-up window to continue without repairing the drive and it will work fine once you select that.

The other major possibility is that the drive was active at the time of the crash and that the file tables were damaged at that time. If this is the case your file are almost always still there but windows hasn't a clue where to find them, it's like somebody shot the librarian and you don't know the name of the book you want.

If it is the second problem you have a couple options depending on how bad the damage is.

1. Try the program"Get My Data Back" it's a bit amateurish but works well on deleted files and minor drive damage.

2. Send your drive to a pro(try one first if you like), there are a few good places in North America that offer cost effective recoveries on minor problems like this generally $100-$200, but it can be more if the damage is more extensive. Armor-IT Data Recovery has adverts in each US state and can be search in FixYa's Database, or on Google if option one doesn't work.

Hope this helps FixYa

Why is there a question mark on my WD My Book 500 external Hard drive short cut?

Wow, Im amazed at the guy who threw his WD into the freezer for a week after a fatal crash and was able to get most of his stuff back! I was so frustrated after my second WD crashed that I gave up and used it as a door stopper. I was too bummed out to even bother returning it for an exchange, and when I did think of doing that, it was too late. I decided never to buy WD again, their drives are pure junk!

Your WD HDD have been attacted by viruses for your computer or outside computer where you used it last. Make sure that you have an up to date antivirus software, scan your computer or the external hard drive, explore your computer, go to tools - folder options under view files & folders select show hidden files and folders apply and ok it.

GO TO CONTROL PANEL, DEVICE MANAGER, SCROLL TO BOTTOM, CLICK + WD DRIVE MANAGEMENT DEVICES, SEE IF WD SES DEVICES IS THERE IF IT IS, DOUBLE CLICK IT. A WINDOW SHOULD POP-UP SEE IF IT SAY'S THIS DEVICE IS WORKING PROPERLY. IF NO DRIVERS ARE INSTALLED, CLICK UPDATE DRIVER. IF THAT DOES NOT WORK, GO TO CONTROL PANEL, ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS, COMPUTER MANAGEMENT, UNDER STORAGE, CLICK DISK MANAGEMENT, MAXIMIZE PAGE, SEE IF MY BOOK IS THERE. IF IT IS, RIGHT CLICK, THEN MARK PARTITION AS ACTIVE...........I HOPE THIS HELPS..........JEFFXC

I have a WD My Book Essential. I have been trying to format it to be compatible with my ps3 but nothing seems to work. I tried to format as FAT32 but now I have a message saying I have ''no writable disk...

Assuming PS3 works with FAT32, format the hard drive using the WD's FAT 32 formatter. Call WD and they will direct you to the correct download location for your hard drive.

Please rate if helpful.

Formatting my WD external hardrive

Hi, In computer terms, formatting a hardrive is the process of preparing/setting the different areas (for read/write) of the harddrive and keeping a list of the addresses. This way the computer would know what data went with what and to where in the HD. Most if not all new HDs are not formatted (prepared) for computer use but are detectable by the PC. Formatting not only makes the HD recognizable, it is now usable. By formatting, the PC also erases any and all references to the existing data on the HD. After being erased and prepared, it also checked for any possible errors. Hope this be of some idea/help. Good luck and kind regards.
