The pulley has fallen off. the belt is off. How is the crankshaft pulley attached to the crankshaft? I haven't been able to jack the car up to remove to plastic inspection cover so it's impossible to see the pulley properly. Any help will be much appreciated.

Crankshaft Position Sensor is on the engine. Typically near the front or belt/pulley area. 9 out of 10 times near the bottom of the engine very near the largest pulley on the motor. Some vehicles( less than a third) have more than one. The 2nd would usually be located near the coil/coil pack(s) of ignition system.
The crankshaft pulley is "press-fitted" onto the crankshaft. A special cranshaft pulley remover tool is required to remove it. (See picture below)
Many parts retailers like AutoZone and Advance Auto have this tool available as a "loaner" or "rental". The loaner programs usually require you to pay the purchace price of the tool up front, then will give you a FULL refund when you return the tool to the store.
