Rattling noise comes from your wiring color coding. make sure positive goes into positive, negative to negative. You may have connected the output into the output of the sub. and satellites are in the input.

Replacing speakers are not a skilled work, can be done at homw. But, reason for distortion should be troubeshooted before replacing the speakers, and make sure that the distrotion is due to damaged speakers itself. Otherwise it will be a waste of money. It will be best to contact any service technician.

DISTORTION IN SW10 SUB

Hello
Check its wpeaker. If speaker voice coil has splitted inside [ which cannot be detctable]; this kind of fault will occur. Give the output of the Sub to an other known good speaker to confirm. You have to open the Sub and connect the Sub speaker wires to an other one to do this check. OK.

My subwoofers make weird noise

crackle or distortion? either you have a problem in your low level imput wires coming from the head unit or your amp is sending a faulty signal...or if you are running dual subs and you have one wired oposite the other they will cancel eachother out, which is a common mistake.make sure that they are both pos. to pos. and neg. to neg.
or there blown or almost blown

there should be a small sesistor soldered onto where the wires are, if so, then this has blown, in some cases, you can remove this, but you will lose any overload protection that it was originaly put there for

Problem with amp?

Give that new sub a chance to "break in". New speakers require a few hours of use before the voice coil(s) and spider break in and began operating at their best performance. Is the box within the operating specs of the sub? Is this a ported box; if so you will here some turbulance type noise from the port. What type of distortion are you hearing? Alternator noise(dentist drill like sound) would only be noticable through a sub at lower volumes due to the frequency response of a sub. Is the amps lowpass crossover turned on?

Connect each speaker coil one at a time to a square 9 volt battery and watch for the cone to move.

Also try hooking another speaker to your amp just to make sure the noise isn't in the amp.

You can use a 9 volt battery to test wire polarity also. Hook up the + wire of the speaker to the + terminal of the battery and the - speaker to the - battery terminal. If the speaker moved UP or OUT then the wiring is correct. If it moved IN or DOWN then the + and - wires are backwards on the speaker.

Also if you have two or more speakers hooked together test all the same way while they are hooked to each other. ALL of the speakers need to move in the same direction at the same time.

Clipping causes more speaker damage than anything. "Dirty Power" can happen in good quality amps too. The gain control is to match the voltage between the headunit and the amp. It is NOT a volume or boost knob. If you overdrive the first stage of the amp and then clip it damage will occur to the amp and speakers at some point.

Hope this helps.

There are several causes of distortion in an audio setup.

1) Speaker is unable to handle the frequency that it's being fed
2) The volume is too high for the speaker to handle
3) The amp can't provide enough power to drive the speaker adequately.

Either way distortion is BAD & best to be avoided unless you want an excuse to buy a new set of speakers :P

Noise I don't like

The only real way of telling is a true bench test of the speakers. The speakers should be but on an amp with an adjustable tone generator at o db. The amp. should be hooked up to load resistors with 0 db(.775 milivolts) frequency sweeping hooked up to a ocilliscope to test properly. Anything else would be just a shot in the dark or a quess.
