SOURCE: How to replace a tube holder or ballast

You can replace a ballast or tube holder if you're fairly familiar with wiring. 1) Turn off the power to the circuit. 2) Remove the tube and the cover plate that conceals the workings. 3) Disconnect or cut the wires to the tube holder or ballast and remove. 4) Strip 1/2" of insulation from the ends of the wires. 5) Mount the component and connect the wires with wire nuts. 6) Replace the cover and tube. 7) Turn the circuit back on. 8) Turn the switch on.

What is a ballast?

A ballast keeps a tiny charge running into devices that would otherwise need to "warm up" in order to function properly. Non-flicker florescent lights use a ballast so that they come on right away when you flick the switch.

Someone told me to replace something called ''ballast'', what's that?

a ballast is like a transformer, as an example, florescent lights require one between the power supply and the tube.

My 4ft fluorescent fixture has whiye and black wires that have been connected, hot and nuetral but it also has a red (brown) wire ? where does this go.

They make dimmable ballasts.
The Lutron dimming ballast shows an orange wire, not a brown >> but other manufacturers might call for different color.
I am guessing here, but ballast should work with Black Hot and White Neutral

I want you to answer back and say if the ballast works with just white and black, Thank you.

Need to hook this up to a lutron eco-t528-277-2 ballast which only has a hot, dimmed hot and neutral

If I understand correctly, you have Leviton florescent dimmer

And you want to connect dimmer to Lutron ECO-series ballast

This is the ballast with 3 wires: Hot dimmed, Neutral and Hot
02b5a79.jpg

Is this your dimmer???? Has Black, White, Red, Yellow-red, & Orange

3103a3a.jpg

Here's how to do it:
Dimmer yellow-red is not used except for 3-way switch >> cap it off with wire nut
Dimmer orange wire connects to ballast Dimmed Hot
Dimmer red wire connects to ballast Hot
Dimmer white wire connects to ballast Neutral

Those are your wires going to ballast. As you can see, you need 3 wires going to florescent fixture

Next, let's focus on Dimmer:
Dimmer green wire goes to bare ground wire
Dimmer black wire connects to Hot from breaker box (we'll test for that next)
Finally the Dimmer white wire connects to ballast Neutral as discussed above BUT is also has to connect to Neutral from breaker box

This means the Dimmer white wire is connected to 2 wires >> one wire goes to florescent fixture and the other wire comes from breaker box

So which wires come from breaker box??
It should be a black and white wire.
Let's test to find Hot and Neutral that come from breaker box.

Mark your wires.
Disconnect all the wires and separate from each other
Turn on power
Use ordinary tester
Tape tester leads to wood sticks so hands stay away from electricity
Power is on
Test each wire to bare copper wire
When tester lights up, that is Hot from breaker box ... this wire connects to Dimmer black wire
Now, test the hot wire to each of the other wires
When tester lights up, that is Neutral wire ... this wire connects to Dimmer white wire, and also connects to Ballast neutral.

Connect one wire at a time, and it will work.

I HAVE AN AUDIOVOX LCD WITH SOUND BUT NO PICTURE.HOW DO I FIX IT .WHEN I TRY TO GET INTO THE MENU I CANT SEE ANYTHING

I strongly believe that one of two things has happened:
1) the back light 'florescent tubes' lamp ballast power supply board has gone out.
2) One of the florescent tubes has failed taking out the lamp ballast.
Is the TV still under it's factory warranty?
If it is not I would call around some TV service providers in your area and get some estimates of repair. Fairly common item to go out.
Blessings,

Lcd tv sets are lit by small glass florescent tubes called cold cathodes and, are powered by: ballasts called inverters... these go out just like your office florescent lighting the parts can be purchased online from electronic parts houses and, are easily replaced

Use of computer ups for lighting purpose

Hi,

To your concern of using a computer type UPS to power other devices:
  • If the light is incandescent type, yes;
  • If the light is florescent type, depends on the design. Some yes, some no. If the ballast is electronic, yes; if the ballast is inductive, no;
  • on the fan, no.
To my knowledge, most low-end commercial UPS produces a square wave. Only high end (expensive) models produces true Sine wave.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.
