Can only see half the picture

We've had our tv for about 2 years now and all the sudden it is showing only the bottom half of the picture... the top half is black and there is a thick line going across the middle like it has shrunk the whole top half down into that line.  We've tried switching channels and unplugging the TV and back in - get the same results every time.  The picture at the bottom of the screen is clear and the sound is fine.

Re: can only see half the picture

Your problem is in vertical output section.

the ckt which is connected to vertical output section is called feedback ckt.

please check.

1 loose contact in feed back ckt.

2 mostly this problem is due to electrolytic capacitor failure.

3 vertical output  IC or transistor failure.

4 check for proper supply to vertical output.

5  low value resistor failure in v/output ckt  (.in rare case)

  1. hope this will help.

Possible failure of the VERTICAL SECTION of the deflection circuit. It is possible that the areas related to the vertical circuit is checked , check for weak capacitors near the output vertical drive. Also a faulty vertical coil- deflection coil- can result in half picture.
A vertical signal test can confirm.

Sounds like a bad connection on or in the vertical output circuit, or the drive circuit. Could also be the vertical output IC or the surrounding componets going bad. Good Luck

Sony TV - Loss of half the picture

sarge, it sounds like the vertical output IC went bad on you. If it was a bad connection or a bad capacitor, your picture would have been a straght line across the screen. They call the output section of the IC a push-pull type of amp, so the top half of the sweep IC went out. If you have had some soldering experience, and or experience with solid state repair, locating the bad IC and replacing it is no big deal. If you havent, stay safe and call in a pro to assist you in this repair, as there is alot of high voltage inside this puppy that is still present even if the set is unplugged. It should not cost an arm or a leg to repair this set. An honest repair on a set like this if you take it in should not exced 125 to 150 bucks. Good Luck PS Please dont forget to rate this thread.

Screen split with black bar through center, top of picture shows in bottom

It sounds as you desribe, the vertical output IC and or the b+ feed capacitor off the Hi voltage transformer feeding the vert. IC its required voltage. Not a really hard job to replace, but not for a handi person to do. This should be left to the professional, as there are no user serviceable parts inside this set and with the HI voltage and the safety issues its best to call somesone to assist you with this repair. Good Luck
