This is a "Voice Message Waiting Indicator" and it means that you have a new voice mail from your telephone service provider, or a new message on your answering machine. A lot of people do not even realize they have voice mail from their service provider because all the phone companies bundle services now. If you do not have a message on either you can reset the indicator by following the instructions in the manual
I'm not sure what word or expression "St." specifically signifies, but I think it's only there when you initially "start" or "set up" the machine. I've not seen it there again after I began actually using the answerer.
