Upc flashes four times

Check the remote control for its infrared emission. It sounds like the infrared emitting LED at the front of the remote control is not functioning well. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. Viewing it in "Mosaic" will make surf easy.

Remote no longer works

In side of the TV set there is a remote receiver module. In some models of sets, there is no module. They use descrete components on the main circuit board. The fault could be in the remote receiver section. In some models of TV sets there are some remote amplifiation circuits along the way to the uPC controler. There could be a fault along this path.

The service tech would troubleshoot this by verifying the voltage supply to the remote receiver circuits. Then he would shoot an IR remote signal to the receiver, and then follow the data flow from the output of the IR reciever circuits along its signal path to the uPC controler. This way, he should be able to see with the scope where the data signal is failing.

Remote is inop

A universal remote is not a reliable way to test a remote control. If you can have an original remote this is the best way to test the remote function of the set. Or, if you have another set that is the same model as yours to test a universal remote, then the test would be acceptable.

If the remote has failed on the TV side, this can be from a number of problems in the set. It can be the remote IR sensor module itself, or one of the buffer amplifier stages on the way to the uPC, or the uPC itself. In some models the buffer amp is built in to the IR sensor module.

Without properly troubleshooting this fault, there is no possible way to actualy determine the point of failure. More than 90% of the time, the failure is the remote. Remotes get dropped, and abused often, and therefore they are subject to a high degree of failure.

Did you try unplugging the set from the AC mains for at least 15 to 20 seconds? This will cause a reset to occure for the uPC. If the fault is still there the set and the remote control will need a proper follow-up to service it.

It can be the remote sensor, or the circuitry that works with it. I don't know its exact location for your model, but you can usualy find it, because at its location it looks like a little black or dark red window in front of it.

The sensor and its related circuitry are servicable. To find the exact fault will require using a DVM and an oscilloscope to trace down where the signal is stopping from the sensor. The sensor feeds the main uPC controler via a number of components on the circuit board. An experienced service tech should be able to troubleshoot this for you, and replace the defective parts. On rare occasions the fault can be with the uPC itself.

It is also possible that there is a cold solder connection on the circuit board that is stopping the remote sensor from getting the remote signals to the uPC.
