Last week I had a new motherboard installed on my Asus Q500A laptop. When I got it back the keyboard backlights no longer worked. This wasn't a problem before I sent it out for repair.

This issue is caused by the BIOS being changed. Here is a post about it in the ASUS forum:
This fixes the issue in this one case : '7C' replaced by 'FF' in the EEPROM

http://pcaudio.org/stuff/G73JhFixKBLights.rar

make a usb boot drive, set your bios so flash drive comes first at start up, put bt.exe and fixmykb.bat to the usb key, run fixmykb.bat

Asus computers with a backlit keyboard come with the flag '7C' written in the cnfg page of the EEPROM.
It's a small sticky memory on the motherboard. Apart from the BIOS.

The flag address is cnfg DD (and not 27 as written in many forums)

It seems, again reading forums from all over the world, that not all Asus RMA centers know that !
Some replaced, the keyboard, the mother board (!), send the computer back without fixing it, but in most cases, fixed it without any explanation.

For months now, ASUS does not release a patch. A very simple app from windows could write this back to EEPROM. But here's the Asus problem : one flag in this eeprom (27) tells windows installer what version (like pro or ultimate edition) of windows to install... So may be some guys over there just dont want the BT.exe utility to be spread around.

In most cases, if you flashed the latest BIOS available, the latest ATK drivers and have your back lite keyboard not working, this fix will give the light back to you !

At last, some few users had the keyboard power ribbon unplugged. Before doing the hardware work to pull it out and risk damaging this fragile plastic stuff, try this fix.

WORKS ON G73 and U80V (just beginning the list). Brings also the light back to U80V illuminated trackpad.

Keyboard of myASUS K50IJ-XA1 15.6-Inch Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Black) is locked How to unlock the same? Kindly help

Well, do you mean only the keyboard is locked? Can you boot the system properly? Is the mouse working? Which Operating System is running on your Laptop?
Here are a couple solutions you can try before you let me know the above queries.
1. Press and hold down the Windows Logo key on the keyboard while pressing the L key on the keyboard once. In other words, Press Windows Key + L once. If this doesn't work, don't forget to include the Fn key while pressing these two keys. Windows+Fn+L. Still nothing?
2. Turn off the Machine, remove the battery and unplug the charger. Leave it for at least 10 seconds, you can press the power On button on the laptop without the battery and the charger installed/plugged in. Now re-install the battery, and turn back On the machine. It should work.
If you need further help, if the problem persists, Let me know with the details.
Good Luck.
Thanks for using FixYa.

WINDOWS XP TABLET EDITION WILL NOT TURN OFF & Keyboard Glitch

Hi Denniskeys,

I'm not 100% sure, but I think that the numberpad function in active on your keyboard while your trying to type. Perhaps you could try disactivating the number pad by using (FN+F11) keys. If its tuned on, you will see a small green light under the F11 key. Once its turned off, that light will also turn off.

Try typing ofter turning it off and see what happens.

Hope this helps.

Mouse and keyboard not recognized on second computer

Solution for the mouse. I have 8 KVM's. Most of my computers work with the KVMs. On 1 inland KVM the logitect and Microsoft optical mice do not work on one computer (but work with the other computers). They both are USB. I hook them up with a USB to PS2 adapter. If I use a ps2 ball mouse connected to the KVM the mouse works. All the Mice work if I directly connect them. Since I do not want a ball mouse I got a Frisby optical PS2 mouse. It works with all the computers on the KVM's.

I do not have a solution for the Keyboard yet. 1 computer (ASUS MB) on my trendnet or belkin 4 postion KVM does not recognize the keyboard.

Asus P5Rd1-vm problems restarting

That computer only works with a PS2 keyboard at powerup.

You could check the bios to see if there is a setting to disable the PS2 adaptor but I have never come across one.

Try running Windows in safe mode by pressing F8 at the beginning of the reboot process and select safe mode. Once windows is up, restart the machine.

If you get the same results while trying to get into safe mode, you may have to restore Windows.
