Try and find a windows 98 boot disk and boot the system off of the cd and you can get to an A: prompt and you can go into fdisk that way.

Get you a windows 98 boot disk and when you get to the a: prompt. Go into fdisk and delete all of the partitions. you'll need to make sure you choose the right type of partition to delete so it will delete them. At that point you won't have any partitions left and then you can create one primary partition. After thats complete then reboot the system with the boot disk and then at the a: prompt you will type:

    format c: /u/c

then press enter and it will format the hard drive for you.

Once it reaches 100% it will as you to enter a volume name, you can just press enter and it will go back to the a: prompt.

Then now you can take the boot disk out, put in your windows cd and boot up off of that and you can now install a fresh copy of windows on your hard drive that is newly formatted. Takes time but its not hard.

Why does Fdisk assign FAT32 file system to the Drrive after partitioning it to extended logical drive?

Fdisk creates, deletes or change a partition on a hard disk and then you need to Format the hard disk so it can be used to store data.
Fat32 is a format file system and it is used when you want to read and write data between a PC and MAC computer.
If you only want to use the hard drive on a PC and using windows XP, Vista or Windows 7 the format the hard drive using NTFS not FAT32.

Im having trouble booting my northgate stap4dr17c. i think the bios got deleted or somthin??? it wont boot at all. i tried using a different hard drive with windows xp and another with windows 7 ultimate,...

If you get to the Windows repair from Windows 7 then you must have a BIOS intact. BEST way to Diagnose this would be the Magic of Kubuntu Linux Make a Boot disk from a functional machine.
If Kubuntu Linux runs from the CD/DVD drive boot disk for a timely period (Do not install Kubuntu)
Then chances are that you have issues with how your windows is configured. Or a bad hard drive (Viruses (possible)) DownLoad Kubuntu Link page. 32/64bit versions

I need to reinstall windows 7 and I was told to fdisk the hard drive on my laptop to do a clean install. If I need to do this can you tell me how to fdisk a laptop hared drive

Before you get into all of this ... try to restore your computer to an earlier date ... if that doesnt work, most manufacturers have the original software for the computer on a special section of the hard disk, called a 'restore' ... try those before you get into the fDisk business. Otherwise you will soon be way over your head ... This process is for someone who has experience in the process. Belive me when I tell you fDisk is not your first and best alternative.

Hello, I formatted the M3000 with Ubuntu Linux, and... i'm stupid

Take your Sanyo back to Linux box, hook up the USB cable, and then mount it.

Copy the files that you want to keep on to the $HOME directory on Linux.

Next, from a terminal, run
sudo fdisk -l

to display all the mounted filesystems on the computer.

It might be /dev/sdb1, or /dev/sdc1 You should be able to pick out the M3000 as its hard disk size is 6.0 GB. Let's assume that the USB drive is on /dev/sdb1

Re-run the fdisk command.

sudo fdisk /dev/sdb

(press m to get the help menu).

Recommend that you choose d to delete a partition,
then n to create a new partition
when asked about the code for the new partition, use b -- this corresponds to Windows 95 FAT32 file system.

Don't forget w to write the new partition definition out to the USB drive.
Lastly q to quit fdisk.

Once you exit fdisk, remount the M3000 and make sure that you copy your files back on to it.

All Linux and Windows systems should be able to recognize your drive now.

80gigs partition then reformatted and displays only 31gigs

If there are files on the drive that you need to recover, then do not format it. It sounds as though the computer that you put the drive into has an issue where the bios perhaps does recognize the drive correctly. Perhaps that can be corrected by updating the bios in the computer, and trying the drive again. Or you may want to put it back into the original computer, back up the files to other media, and then put the drive in the computer and re-partition.

What does the FDISK - "DISPLAY PARTITION INFORMATION" utility report? Do you have a copy of FDISK? If the partitoins in FDISK add up correctly, then it could just be that the data is corrupt, and windows is just unable to read. If that's the case, you should try a recovery application to restore your data..

My Compaq Presario F730US Laptop will not start up. I found out that it is a Hard Drive Issue.. Please Help!

As I have mentioned in the past these problems are usually connected with improper partioning with the hard drive. My suggestion would be to use FDISK to check for partitions that are marked as not being used.
Be Careful when using Fdisk because it can and will sometimes backfire.
(you can find Fdisk on just about any startup disk
Just make sure that there are startup files on the disk

I couldn't install windows xp in Compaq cq45 112au

Try using an win 98 startup disk on floppy and start your computer with disk in.Let it finish loading the drivers and then type in fdisk erase your partition and then make a new one. then restart the computer with floppy still in then this time type in format c:/ and format the drive after it is done then you can install win xp.But you need to repartition your hard drive and then format after that to get xp to install Oh yeah when you go to fdisk allow large drive usage

I`m unable to install windows 98 in seagate 80 gb ide barracuda hdd

For W98, if you create the bootdisk from within windows, you will need to go here to download the newest version of FDISK.EXE then copy it to the bootdisk, allowing it to overwrite the older version. This way you will have support for larger harddrives.

FDISK LIMITATION WITH 64GB DRIVES:
Why does FDISK not recognize my disk (or RAID array) which is larger than 64GB?

There is a bug in Microsoft's FDISK under Windows 95B, 98 and 98SE that can be corrected by downloading a newer version. See Knowledge Base Article Q263044 for more information.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q263044

When you use Fdisk.exe to partition a hard disk that is larger than 64 GB (64 gigabytes, or 68,719,476,736 bytes) in size, Fdisk does not report the correct size of the hard disk.

The size that Fdisk reports is the full size of the hard disk minus 64 GB. For example, if the physical drive is 70.3 GB (75,484,122,112 bytes) in size, Fdisk reports the drive as being 6.3 GB (6,764,579,840 bytes) in size.

NOTE: This hotfix is not designed for 48-bit logical block addressing (LBA) hard disks, and it is not supported on hard disks larger than 137 GB. However, even if the drive is physically larger than 137 GB, if you create partitions smaller than 137 GB, this FDISK.EXE version will work correctly. (THE FORMAT COMMAND WILL SHOW THE DRIVE AMOUNT IN DOS TO BE OFF THE MARK, BUT WILL BE CORRECT WHEN YOU GET INTO WINDOWS ITSELF)

Direct English Version download:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/Win98/Update/8266R/W98/EN-US/263044USA8.EXE

This package installs the updated Fdisk.exe to the Windows\Command and Windows\Options\Cabs folders, on a computer running Windows 98 or Windows 98 Second Edition. If you are starting a computer from a Windows 98 Startup Disk in order to partition and format the hard disk, you should copy the updated Fdisk.exe from the Windows\Command folder to the Startup Disk, replacing the original Windows 98 or Windows 98 Second Edition version of Fdisk.exe on the Startup Disk.

Installing Windows on new PC with Sata hard drive with no operating system installed

press any key to boot...

usually that comes up when a cd is inserted and its waiting for you to press a key so that it boots the cd

Formatting shouldn't be necessary if its a new pc unless your trying to get rid of the operating system.

Are you trying to install windows xp / vista ?
