SOURCE: boot

Hello,
This might be a problem with your harddrive. When your laptop is not seeing the hard drive, it attempts to boot to other devices and may give the message shown in your post.

Thanks,
Lolita

Well, there are a few possibilities. First, make sure the hard drive is fully seated correctly. If it is, then try turning on the computer and going into the BIOS menu. this can usually be accessed by pressing a key that appears onscreen on boot up. in this menu, be careful not to change anything unless you know what you're doing. look for an option called hard drive test or something similar, and see if it comes out ok. If it executes, but has errors, i might have some software that may work. If it fails to find the hard drive, things get more complicated. I'd like to know how much work is needed for the laptop, so if you can get back to me if these tests work, or if the hard drive wasn't seated correctly, that would be great.

Also, I have ways to access the drive if there is a complete failure and even fails to spin up, or if it is corrupted, i have a cd you can burn to recover the data. I'd just like to know if we have to resort to those though before i explain it all, since it can be a lengthly process.

SOURCE: PXE-E61: media test failure check cable

The PXE-X61 error means that the laptop cannot detect the hard drive. This can be caused by a faulty disk controller, or a faulty disk drive.
1st. Reseat the hard drive and see if the laptop boots up.

2nd. Go into the BIOS configuration and see if the BIOS detects the hard drive.

3rd. If the BIOS can't detect the hard disk, the remove the hard drive and connect it to an USB hard drive adapter and plug it into a working computer's USB port. If this computer detects this drive as an external disk drive and you can see the contents of the hard drive, then the hard drive is OK and the fault is in the laptop.

4th. If the hard drive cannot be detected then the hard drive is faulty, you need to replace the faulty hard drive in your laptop and install Windows to get an operating laptop again.

Toshiba satellite L455D-S5976 PXE-E61 media test failure...brand new hard drive What do I do???

You need to boot from an installation CD for the operating system, or the Toshiba restore set. New hard drives are completely blank when you purchase them. The computer is looking for something to boot from and cant find it, so it trys to boot from ethernet. Check your bios set up for boot order and boot devices. You might try disabling boot from network.

Hope this helps

The system is not finding any bootable media (Hard Drive) and is attempting to boot via the network card (PXE Boot) the error message is saying that there is not PXE network to boot from and it is exiting the process.
Generally, this is caused by a hard Drive failure. Reseat the drive and or drive connections and see if the system will find the hard drive.

PXE error means that it is trying to boot from an ethernet / lan connection.

check your boot order options first and set it to boot
1. Hard drive
2. CD rom drive
3. Floppy (or usb if you know how to do this)
4. network(aka PXE)

If it still fails then yes there MAY be an issue with your hard drive.

Check all hard drive connections before running off for a new one.
This can be especially true with SATA type drives most of which dont have any sort of true locking device to hold the connections secure.

Not always the Hard drive, boot into the bios setup utility and de-select network bootfrom the boot options. If it tries to network boot first you will always get that failure.
