We think we solved the problem with a battery back-up unit. Seems when powerline fails, fan doesn't get a chance to cool down the bulb and it melts for a failure a day or so later.

We traced one powerline failure to the last bulb and perhaps my own accidental unplugging the set prior to that.
So far so good. I accidentally unplugged the set and the battery back-up worked. The salesmen should include battery back-up in every sale and I informed him as such. Thanks for you observation.
Would've responded sooner but my Mail threw it into junk.

I would suggest you getting the shop to look at your cooling fan, assembly or the current surge suppressor connected to the bulb filiments.

My Sony Wega KDF-55XS955 TV keeps getting a blank screen every 4-5 minutes. I've been told I need to replace a bulb; however, cannot figure out where to locate the bad bulb. Any assistance would be...

julian1390,

That could certainly be your problem. If the unit has not had the lamp changed in the last 3 years it ceratinly would not hurt to do that. Even if this is not the problem you will have a replacement lamp for the time in future when the lamp does go. I have a tip at http://www.fixya.com/support/r4168009-change_lamp_in_dlp_projection_tv which will help you do this.

Thanks for using FixYa and for the great rating.

Tv bulb comes on for about a minute then goes off and keeps cycling on and off.

This is symptom of weak lamp in tv that need to be replaced.
If lamp has not been replaced in last 2-3 years, replace it to fix the tv issue. Lamp replacement procedure is easy and written in user manual.

Pink line at top after bulb replacement

If you have a pink shadow (meaning you can still see the picture in it) the light engine (projector part of tv) where the bulb goes is failing. you have to replace projector. contact Sony quick as it might still be under extended warranty. They had class action lawsuit and extended warranty on many models becuase of this problem but they expire soon. Good luck.

Bottom right side of screen (about 4 inches high) has blue tint

I had the same problem with my 4 yr old Sony KDF60WF655 rear projection set, and I was fortunate to buy a 4 year extended warranty - because it was the "Optic Block", ($1300. -not incl labor), that was replaced to fix the problem. That part contains all new LCDs, & multiple Lens & some electronics. I had already got a new bulb (under warranty) a few weeks earlier, that I had not yet installed so the service guy did replace that as well. (This happened 3 weeks before my warranty ended).

He told me that he replaces hundreds of Sony Optic Blocks every year and that many Sony Rear Projection sets have automatic FACTORY extended warranties (up to 10 years), because of some known problems with the blue LCD panels. You might want to contact a SONY office & see if your set is covered.

ALSO - The tech checked my Service Codes & showed me the TV had been running for 10051 hours in about 4 years - on the Original bulb! He was quite surprised because he said the bulbs usually last about 5000 - 7000 hours. He also said it's good to replace them BEFORE they go bad, because they can sometimes burn out the amplifier that powers the bulb, (which is a seperate piece that attaches to the outside of the Optic Block). My TV is like new now.
