If the CPU is getting hot, you may have an intermittant CPU fan and or a bad power supply fan. The fans may turn but intermittantly.Keep the case open and watch the fans. I usually will stop the fan and see it if takes off normally by holding the fins for a second or so.

Hard drives can exhibit extraordinary heat output as the platter bushings start to go bad. Sometime they will make noise, but not always. As the platter bushing wear out the drive system draws more amperage from the power supply. This can cause both the HDD and the power supply to generate exesive heat. Unfortunately, there is no definate test for this. If you have a spare drive, you can run it for a couple of hours to test this theory. Best bet is to get that data backed up before you loose the drive all together.

Which cdrom is it? Is it a windows XP cd? This is an older PC? Does it have a floppy disk drive? Try downloading from Barts a bootable floppy disk, set boot order to floppy in BIOS, change to cdrom drive letter after booting to floppy (D:?)
