Question about Garmin Nuvi 760 Car GPS Receiver

Garmin nuvi 760 charging problem

Nuvi 760 has new battery, but not charging from either GTM-20 or the cradle. Not sure how to figure out where the connection is bad. When I wiggle the wire it will momentarily charge, so i know the problem is either the connector on the GTM-20 or the connector on the cradle. Any suggestions are welcome.

The wire may be defective, especially where it plugs into the connectors.

SOURCE: Charging Garmin Nuvi battery for first time

The Garmin Nuvi 855 uses a Lithium-ion battery. It is a very clean system and does not need priming as nickel-based batteries do. The 1st charge is no different to the 5th or the 50th charge.

In other words there is no memory effect with these batteries and it should be safe to charge it for as long as you like on the first charge. I would estimate 4 hours will give you a full charge if you wish to do this from the outset.

SOURCE: batteries will not charge

Your not the Lone Ranger on this problem. After awhile the battery will no longer take a charge. IT is not a replaceable battery by the user. It must be sent back to Garmin for a new battery. If you only use the gps when in a vehicle, it still will work fine when pluged into a 12v source.

SOURCE: Garmin nuvi / gtm 20 charger not working. I think

If yours has a plastic tip at the silver metal contact, just unscrew the plastic part between the silver ring and the silver tip. Counter clockwise! Fuse should fall out but take cautions not to lose the silver tip part. I you do it can be found at

Will a garmin gtm 20 charger work with a garmin nuvi 660 gps

Yes! The GTM-20 is a charger with a built-in traffic receiver. The charger plugs into the cradle for the Nuvi 660 and then the Nuvi 660 snaps into the cradle.

However to receive traffic with the GTM-20, you will need to purchase a subscription, either yearly or lifetime. The traffic receiver receives traffic information from FM radio broadcast stations, which broadcast traffic data.

My nuvi 660 seems to have "lost" the traffic portion . When I touch tools and go to look for traffic - or "settings" there is no settings . Could it be the GTM-20 FM transmitter is bad?...

If the GTM-20 Traffic Receiver is functioning, you should see a blue diamond on the main screen and you should be able to find a traffic icon in the menu.

If the diamond is grayed out, then the traffic receiver hasnt locked yet. If the traffic symbol is completely missing, then yes it could be a problem with the traffic receiver or the cradle or plug that plugs into the cradle.

The Nuvi 6xx receives traffic information from the GTM-20 receiver through the plug that plugs into the cradle.

Nuvi 760 will not accept charge from car charger. Does charge from USB. Car charger lights up indicating that 12V is OK. Fuse checks OK. When plugged into car Nuvi reports 'external source required for...

Your units powered cradle has probably died out, this is very common with the 7xx series, see if you have a friend or someone that has the 7xx cradle you could try. But it is a very common issue, if you do need a replacement one can be obtained from here

Hope this helps!

Nuvi 760 will not take charge

I don't know which of the three ways you're trying to charge - car cradle, via USB cable to a computer or via accessory AC adapter. An 18 month old 760 should still have a good battery.

If you are using your car cradle to charge consistently, use one of the other methods and allow the 760 to charge for 8 hours. Use of the car cradle can cause the 760 to stop taking a charge after a while, and switching to one of the other methods should "refresh" the internal battery. Since the AC adapter wasn't included in the box, the USB cable method is likely your only other choice. While connected to your computer, you should download & update the 760's firmware. It's fast and free - and could solve other potential issues. Get the WebUpdater software direct from Garmin.

It is also possible that the fuse in the cigar lighter plug has opened. Disassemble the the plug to check for and replace a blown fuse.

If unable to get the 760 to accept a charge, you might need to replace the battery. There are several sources for batteries - but a free call to Garmin Support should be your first move.

Please rate this reply and good luck!

Garmin nuvi is no longer charging via car adapter. I plug it into the car lighter as usual, but it never charges and continues to operate off of battery life.

Your car adapter may be broken. try unscrewing the top of it to check the fuse inside the cable. that can easily be replaced. other than that it could be the cradle (if your cable plugs into your cradle) or the back port of the unit in a worst case scenario

Garmin gtm 20 lost tip and spring can i get replacement parts

The won't get it. You'll have to call the 1-800-800-1020 number and press the number for the automotive service option. After that, you'll have to wait another 30min ( I waited 90 min - home waiting on the cable man), then you'll finally get to a person who will take all of 60 seconds to place the GTM-20 tip kit on order for you. The service person said that it was a common problem, but don't know why it's not on the Garmin site to order on line. Total parts and shipping $11.50. Hope this helps.
