If the defrost timer goes on, then the compressor and fans will not operate for about a half hour.

How to check everything
http://www.acmehowto.com/howto/appliance/refrigerator/refrigerator.php

If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air and eventually affect the freezer too.

check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

You can turn the defrost timer till it clicks and everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replace the timer. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn the timer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle.

Freezer and frige not that cold

The fridge gets its cold air from the freezer through a vent(damper) between the freezer and fridge. The fan in the freezer blows air through it. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp ..

Frige not cold,freezer working ok

Hi: When this happens it means that there is frost built up in the back of the refrigerator. You are having an issue with the defrost heater or the defrost timer. There is an off chance the refrigerator's freezer is over packed with food and there is no circulation. If you're handy empty the fridge and take a hair dryer to the back wall to melt away the frost from behind. Look at the heater. A glass tube with a wire coil running through it. If the coil is broken, replace it. If not you will be looking at a defrost timer. Usually on a circuit board and expensive. Good Luck, Jeff

Mullion between freezer and refrigerator is extremely hot.

They rarely use 'heaters' anymore. If there is a heater there will be somthing like a 'energy saver' option to turn it off. More likely it is a mullion loop that is part of the sealed system tubing. The harder the frige works the hotter that area will be. So if the inside temp rises so will the temperature of the mullion. Start by checking your frige and freezer temperatures with a thermometer. The freezer should be between 5-10 deg ABOVE zero and the frige should be about 35 or 36 deg. Also check that the condenser is not dirty. The condenser is the coils that are usually underneath the frige. They should be cleaned at least annually. Also while you're under there make sure the condenser fan is running. You should feel a little air movement and possibly hear it running from the front under the doors. If it's not running you'll need to find out why, but would usually be a problem with the motor. Also there was a carboard panel on the back at the bottom of the frige from the factory, that panel HAS to be in place to direct air across the condenser and not back behind the frige.

Re: Dispensing water and Ice

the water valve is located behind the frige, remove the lower back panel and follow the water line from the house to the frige as that line meets the frige that's the valve that may be bad,but before you change it, you can test it, remove one of the 2 lines that goes to the side of the frige and push the switch to get some water, water should come from back there, if not re move the other line, it meant that the first line belong to the ice maker, try the other one now, it should give you water. if not replace the valve.
