Hello Paul, I am happy to assist you!

If your freezer is not cooling below 30 degrees, it could have a floating restriction in the lines or something more complicated like an issue with the sealed system that only a professional can repair. This can include the compressor not working correcting, the evaporator fan not turning, or even coolant in the lines with incorrect levels to properly cool. Do you hear the compressor running? If the compressor is running, humming or even a little warm then that is typically normal. However, I suggest cleaning your freezer out completely including the coils you can reach (typically located underneath or behind the unit). Also try checking and see if the door seal is bad; place a dollar bill between the body of your freezer and the door. Now close the door. The dollar bill should stay in place and pull out with a small amount of resistance. If the dollar bills falls out when placed between the gasket and cabinet double check to see if the door is being blocked by anything stopping it from closing. If any of these suggestions prove to be ineffective, it would be advisable to connect with a professional to accurately pinpoint any potentially more serious issues.

is it staying at 16?? a freezer thats attached to a refrigerator would be considered fully functional about id say 30 degrees and below, As long as it stays under 32 I wouldnt worry about it, you can always try unplugging it for a few minutes if you want, but as long as temp stays at 16 or lower than 32, its fine............. a deep freezer are the ones that usually get alot colder than 32, but generally only because thats the systems only job, its not also running a refrigerator.

Check the compressor efficiency. See if it will pump down. In most cases, a good compressor will pull down to about 15" vacuum. Also, be sure that the refrigerant amount was weighed in and not done by pressures only.

What is the coldest recommended temperature a chest freezer can withstand in an unheated garage?

Hi there

It should have no problems down to -30 deg C or -20f

But it may sweat on the outside if it is damp and cold, which can cause corrosion of the casing.

Below the above temperatures the thermostat will not operate

Automatic defrost has stopped working. How do I fix it?

Good day,
There are 3 components to a defrost system. The defrost heater, which is mounted to the bottom of the cooling cool, behind the rear panel in the freezer compartment. Second, is a defrost thermostat, which is a 1" round disk clipped to the top of the same coil in the freezer compartment as well.
They both can be checked with an ohm meter but the coil must still be cold. Unplug the machine.
The heater should check at below 30 ohms. If it tests infinity (no resistance) it is defective and needs replaced. The defrost thermostat (which must be below 30 degrees for testing) should read zero ohms. If not, replace. It is the most common part to fail.

The last component is the defrost control, which is mounted in the fresh food compartment and can be either a standard timer or adaptive (solid state) control. It is the second most likely component to fail.

Below is an excellent tutorial on defrost systems.

Traulsen ur 48 dt freezer want go below 10 deg

The first place to look is to check the charge. Using guages check the low and high side pressures and their relationship to one another. I'm assuming your unit is a R-404 unit which, if fully charged and the condenser is clean, and the fan is operating, should have about 210 to 250 high side pressure. Other things to check: evaporator coil ice/frost free; defrosting properly to obtain a clean coil; all evaporator fans running. If low side pressure is above 30 PSI you have a weak compressor. Whatever, fix the Traulsen unit, its head and shoulders above anything else on the market today.

FREEZER WORKS GREAT BUT FRIDGE NOT SO GOOD-COILS CLEAN

Sounds like a evaporator fan or defrost problem. Your freezer should be colder then that, 5 degrees or below. Anyway, any cold air the fresh food compartment gets is blown over from the freezer, verify you can feel the air flow or visually see or hear the fan in the freezer compartment. If that checks ok more then likely your defrost system has a defect. This consists of a defrost timer or adaptive defrost board, a defrost terminator which is just a bi-metal thermostat set typically at 30 degrees or so and a heater element, either a calrod or 1 or 2 glass encased elements. When this system fails you end up with a block of ice on the coils through which air cannot circulate.

Refrigerator will not cool

Do you mean the display won't go below 70 or that the actual temps won't go below 70? First try to unplug the refer for 20-30 seconds then plug it back in. Hopefully that will reset the levels to factory settings (usually around 0 for freezer and 36 for refer).
