The sand point at the bottom of your well pipe has a screen designed to keep sand out of your water system. This screen has probably failed and that is where the sand is coming from.Unfortunatly this is not an easy fix. The well needs to be pulled and the sand point replaced.

Trying to put pump system together. Do we remove the drain screen before adding sand?

Our terminology is not coinciding...
Follow these steps...
  • 1st - understand that a pump moves water thru your system.
  • A filter cleans your water
Sand does not go into a pump.
sand goes into the filter.
  • when adding sand into filter tank, top valve is not in place, you Need to first add water, to cover the laterals at bottom
  • Then PLACE a cap or something/anything, over the stand pipe, so NO sand goes into that pipe! IMPORTANT! Begin to add sand.
    • Do this slowly, being very careful to NOT disturb position of stand pipe! Do NOT Lift it or allow it to rise up! Keep it centered!!
  • Add required amount of sand
  • Remove stand pipe cover/cap that placed
  • Install valve onto tank
  • Complete plumbing in-out of the valve
    • Presuming you have the plumbing complete from and to pool?
    • Pool suction port to front of pump. Out of pump into 'Pump' port of filter valve
    • Out of 'Return' port to pool

We need to change the sand in our filter ,it is a sw256t hayward ,but dont know how to remove other sand, does anyone know how?

Once you have the plumbing disconnected and valve removed,
Use a shop vac. Works well.
Once the sand is almost all removed, you can tip the tank over & rinse out with hose for the rest.

Sand in water

It sounds like the pocket developed for your wellpoint has collapsed. In order to redevelop it, you must pump water down into the well pipe for some time. I'm not sure how long. This opens up a pocket for your point so that it has no contact with sand. Of course, everything else must be flushed to remove the sand from your entire system. Goos luck!

How do i change the sand in the hayward model sp 711

Hello, 1 You need to unscrew the drain plug and screen (if it is still there!) at the base of the filter. 2 You can reclaim most of the sand by letting the filter drain through a sieve (lots of work) or use new sand. 3 Uncouple union joints or couplers that attach to filter head. 4 Remove filter head. 5 You can try pulling some sand out of the top. However, do not damage the filter fingers in the sand. 6 Use a hose to blast the sand out the bottom drain. 7 Inspect all fingers, replace if necessary. 8 After all is cleaned out, place finger mount inside filter. Cover top of mount with a cup or similar to keep the new sand out of the finger assembly. 9 Replace drain plug and screen. 10 Fill filter halfway with water. 11 Slowly pour sand in and spread evenly. 12 Remove mount cover. 13 Reinstall head, unions and couplings. 14 Prime pump and test for leaks.
Good Luck

The black bend and arm that goes inside the tank does not fit in my TOTO Carlyle toilet. Can I get a smaller bend, or different piece to go inside the tank? The lever installs on the end of the tank, not...

the reason it doesn' t fit is cause for a toto side mount you need a specific handle for that type of toilet. the universals don't fit that. you can go to a plumbing supply house to get the right handle or you'll have to go on line or contact toto directly.

I have a Hayward sand filter and its leaking from the bottom. I know this because water is collecting under the stand it sits on. I can't move because of the plumbing. What do I do.

Depending on how close the pump is to the filter, you may be getting tricked and the shaft seal in the pump is leaking. If the bottom of the filter is leaking, it's either the drain plug, which is obvious and you can see it. Or the tank is cracked because it wasn't winterized properly, depending on your situation. There is nothing else underneath that filter that will leak. You need to locate exactly where that water is coming from. If it is the shaft seal in the pump, it is hard to see but look underneath your pump where the plastic housing meets the motor, the shaft seal is in that area, although you can't see it because it is inside the pump, but if it is leaking, that is where you will see it. Need an update after you check that stuff out.

My husband changed the sand in our Hayward Sand filter for our pool and now it leakes sand into the pool. What's wrong?

Thank you for posting your question here on

He broke the lateral assembly in the process and it will need to be replaced. You'll need to know the model number of the filter to get one. Then remove the sand, replace the assembly, fill the tank ~1/2 way with water, slowly add the sand back into the tank and replace the valve.

Instructions on placement of the lateral assmebly w/center pegs

That placement is automatic based on the center pipe resting on the bottom of the filter tank and the valve being fully seated into the opening on top of the filter and clamped into possition. You likely have damaged laterals and need to replace that assembly in order to fix the sand issue. When refilling the tank with sand, be sure to fill it nearly half way with water before adding the sand.
