Ok I need to start by saying if youre doing it my way, you need another hardrive and a usb stick. If you dont have either, then youre outta luck or you gotta try the other ways posted around the forum. I will say that i just found out this has been posted up before on the us ps3 forum, but i have elaborated on it and i did find out the solution myself before i found that post.
Anyways HERES THE STEPS:
1) Download the ps3updat.pup file off sony's website. You need to make a folder in your usb stick called "PS3" and within that folder, a "UPDATE" folder, it must be in capital letter for the name. Then drop the ps3updat.pup file into the update folder. (If you have problems with this step, visit http://us.playstation.com/support/systemupdates/ps3/pc_update/index.htm)
2) Plug in "New/Temporary" hard drive into ps3 (For Slim - Theres a cover under the ps3 that you pop off and theres a screw that you have to screw off in order to access the hardrive For Fat - I think theres a cover on the side, im not sure i dont have the fat)
2) Boot into safe mode (Press and hold onto the power button untill you hear the double beep, then let go of power button), follow on screen instructions, and select update firmware. Follow the on screen instructions and insert your usb when prompt to. Let it format your temporary hard drive and let it install the firmware. When its done installing the new firmware on your temp hardrive and gets to the language selections, internet settings, etc screen, you can choose to continue and finish them off or turn it off at this point.
3) Now with the ps3 off, put back your original hardrive in and boot up your ps3. Once booted up, it wont be in the update loop anymore! But instead it will tell you that it cannot boot up system due to firmware difference and must be updated. Plug back in your usb if you took it out, and press start and select at the same time, to continue with the firmware update. NOTE!!!! Most likely you will experience what happend to me. It will stay at 99% for awhile... so dont panic, it will go through! And thats it! Your data should be intact, you would have saved 150 dollars for repair, but most of all, your firmware is updated!

Ps3 system update error

Sorry its so long but its step by step ;)

1. Download the update onto a USB stick using your pc. (Hopefully you have one). Create a new folder named UPDATE and drag the file into it. Then create a folder called PS3 and drag the 'UPDATE' folder into that. Note the folders must be in capitals.....
2. Underneath your console is a small panel near the front that pops open to reveal a small screw. Unscrew it and then remove a bigger panel on the actually front of the console to reveal the hard drive. It has a wire handle that will help you remove the hard drive. (Don't take it out yet)
3. Turn your console on and when the update loop begins take the hard drive out. After a minute or so it will realise this has happened and a error message will appear and a 60 second countdown will start. Let this time countdown and allow the console to restart. ( a post a read on a forum said that the console will restart on a screen that will allow you to download the update via USB but is did not happen for me and the system said it was unable to start because it could not detect a hard drive.)
4. Turn the console totally off and insert the hard drive. Turn it back on and as it is beginning to start carefully take the hard drive back out. Then a screen will hopefully appear that says to connect your controller to the USB wire and press the ps button. Do this and then it will give you the option to update via USB. Insert your USB drive and press start and select on your controller.
5. Then comes a step that I can't really explain and is the trial and error part of the process. When the system is searching for the USB update I inserted the hard drive. On the first try it didn't find the update and a error message appeared, but as I tried the whole process again it found the update and completely the process. I didn't lose any saves and more importantly, didn't pay a penny!!

How do I correct error code 8002F310

The error code your getting is saying that your PS3 is failing to update. You can disconnect your system from the internet, turn off automatice updates and try it manually or you can try loading the update through the PS3's safe mode. This link will show you how to get your PS3 into safe mode. https://support.us.playstation.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1488/kw/Safe

Also, you can download the update onto a flash drive and load it onto your system from there. This link will explain how to do so.

Ps3 error codes 8002f310

Try turning off the ps3, unplugging for a minute and plugging back in. If that still does not work, are you able to enter safe mode. If you are you can try doing the upgrade there.
Go to this link and you can see the step by step on how to enter safe mode. There is also a video showing the step by step.
