Thermostat not running furnace properly

Assuming that particular thermostat has a common mercury switch, the wiring behind or just inside the unit may be causing a strong enough magnetic field to throw off the balance of the mercury (liquid metal). The same scenario could be caused by other wiring or devices near the thermostat.
To test this theory, hold a compass as near as possible to the thermostat and wait it to come on automatically. If the needle moves when the switch engages, the magnetic field is strong enough the throw the balance off.

When tucking-in the wires for the thermostat, avoid winding the wires in a spiral or wrapping them around anything. An active current through wrapped or winding wires will create an electromagnetic field.

This thermostat is not field servicable, you cannot calibrate this thermostat.May want to consider moving it closer to return air of equipment, for more accurate sensing of building temperature. Why do you feel that it needs calibrated? Suggest setting another thermometer on top to verify its accuacy.

Only the old analog thermostats can be calibrated, and even then its very touchy. The newer digital thermostats are not made to be calibrated.

Honeywell Thermostat RTH7400D

The thermostat will not cut off the A/C until the thermometer reading gets to 76.

If there is not a heat source near/behind the thermostat which is causing the thermometer to read higher than actual room temperature, it sounds like the thermostat thermometer is out of calibration.

There are ways to calibrate it, but much to involved to go into here.

One solution is to just set the thermostat at 80, knowing that it's really set on 76.

Another solution is to replace the thermostat.
