    Hello,
here is Mathew from germany, and I have the same problem with my canon i9950, orange light blinks fife times...
I tried a new (orginal) canon (tm?) printhead - that doesn't help.
I tried setting back the printwast-counter like in this solution:
    http://www.fixya.com/support/t483756-can...
    - that doesn't help.
I actually opened my Printer (I already don't have guaranty, but if U have, look in your contract be4 opening Ur printer) and checked the waste-ink, but that seems 2 be ok.

So, some1 have maybe na idea what could help??

Thanks 4 any sugestions, and, by the way, Im sorry 4 my bad english, but I hope it's understandeble...

Hallo again, I just phoned with another canon-supporter and in his opinion there has to be a hardware defect, so one or more boardshave a defect and I'll have to send my printer to canon repair...

Maybe someone has a better solution ?

  • Anonymous Jan 12, 2009

I have the same problem, hmmm, sounds like its fatal?

  • Anonymous Feb 05, 2009

The print head is not the problem, and nor is the CD tray. I have changed both and replaced all the carts and none of these made any difference. Time for an Epson I think!

Five flashes: Print head not installed / Print head not installed correctly / Defective print head
Install the print head. If the print head is already installed, remove the print head and check the electrical contacts for foreign matter, then reinstall.
For the i9950 ONLY: When the CD-R tray is set in the printer, remove the CD-R tray and set the paper output tray to the paper print position, then install the print head.
After reinstalling the print head, you may need to realign it.
If this error still remains, the print head may be damaged

@barry bauman
No, it has nothing to do with the waste ink pad.
From the cannon manual for service technicians:

5 times The print head is not installed [1401],
or it is not properly installed (EEPROM data of the print head is faulty) [1403/1405].
Install the print head properly, and close the access cover.
Or, with the print head installed, turn the printer off and on.

8 times Warning: The waste ink absorber is
almost full (approx. 95% of the maximum capacity). [1700]
Pressing the Resume/Cancel button will exit the error, and
enable printing. ...

Had a problem with a Canon i9950 CD tray not operating or printing.
Took to a specialist and was quoted $582 to repair.
Tried the old blank media I had used as opposed to new cheaper media i was using, and ...... problem solved.

Yes, the flashing light on start-up is actually the Waste Ink pad is full
a Canon tech suggests that the job is very difficult (unfortunately even for them)
HOWEVER....
good news is that you can override it for awhile...

  • turn off power
  • press & hold RESUME button, then press POWER button
  • continue to hold POWER then release RESUME button
  • Press RESUME Button 2x quick
  • Release both RESUME and POWER
  • Green light will now blink, then stop
  • With Green light on....press RESUME 4x
  • Push Power button to turn printer off
this should resolve the issue

Blinking orange 5 times and 1 green

Try this:
Most of the time when a printer used for a certain period the ink would dry out and caused an error message. What you do is to replace with a new inks pad inside the printer and reset that error message. Once it is done, your printer will work again!

For Printer Model: Canon S9000, S300, S400, i550, i560, i850, i860, i865, i9100, i9950, PIXMA iP3000:

1. Turn off printer
2. Hold down Resume button and press Power button.
3. Keep holding down Power button and let Resume button go.
4. Press Resume button 2 times then let BOTH buttons go.
5. Green lights will flash and then stop blinking.
6. When green lights are solid, press the Resume button 4 times.
7. Press the Power button and the printer should turn off, if not, press the Power button once more.
8. Your printer should respond as normal.
