SOURCE: What does a "12" on my 96-140 F Degree Control mean?

I'm mr.grzz, thanks for your question,
A code 12 on your control pad has allot of different remedy's, here is a list,
First it means you have flame failure,
Check to make sure the gas is turned on at the unit, the meter, or tank,
Check for obstructions at the flue outlet,
did they check the gas pressure ?
was the gas line properly sized ?
did they use Rinnai venting materials and was it properly installed ?
was the condensate collar installed properly ?
did they double check to make sure vent lengths were well within limits?
did they verify the dip switch settings ?
is the unit properly grounded ?
check power supply for loose connections
check power supply for proper voltage and voltage drop
check to see if flame rod is connected, this would be my guess as to what your trouble is, flame rod could be out of alignment as well, not sensing the flame, the other thing would be the gas, air in the line will cause this too,
the flame rod needs checked for carbon build up,
I know thats alot of tech data, but for all intents and purposes it would be best if you called a service tech that is certified with Rinnai to come take care of you, if you call them tell them you have a code 12, and you have the possible causes, I hope this was of help to you, please write us back and let us know, again thanks for your question, mr.grzz

I have had my Rinnai tankless for about 8 years without problems. Recently I am noticing that the water temperature is fluctuating from the set temperature to a cooler temp and then back up to the set...

The Rinnai will shut off it can't maintain the temperature you have set to within +/- 3 degs so I'd guess that might be the problem. The cause can be a few options. Check water flow first; any filters you have in tapware, main water flow etc. get cleaned. The Rinnai has a water line filter in the incoming supply, middle pipe under the heater just after the isolating valve. Gas supply could be the other option mainly being a possible intermittent fault in the gas regulator. Hard to check this one short of just changing it. Final option is some sort of electronic malfunction, pretty rare. I'd start with the water flow issue as you can do this yourself. Checking the gas will need a good technician with digital gas pressure guage to check incoming and working gas pressures; it might just need to be recalibrated. Just hasd a thought about the heat exchanger being scaled up if you are in an arera where water scale is a problem but this would normally take far less than 8 years to be a problem. Sorry can't be of more help; hard when it might be a few different causes.

Rinnai is buzzing and reads 130 LC

Sorry to read about your problem, I hope this helps you out.
The 130 is your temp setting

Scale Build-up in Heat Exchanger (when checking maintenance code history, "00" is substituted for "LC")
Flush heat exchanger. Refer to instructions in manual. Replace heat exchanger. NOTE: The LC code is the only code that will allow the unit to keep running.

The display will alternate between the LC code and the temperature setting.

The controller will continue to beep. The LC code will reset if power is turned off and then on.

How do I turn it on? I press the "on" button and

The manual says:
http://www.coinwash.com/temp/rinnai.pdf

"For the name of the Authorized Distributor or Installer nearest you, please contact your local HVAC dealer or gas service technician, visit the Rinnai website (www.rinnai.us), call Rinnai at1-800-621-9419 or write to Rinnai, 103 International Drive, Peachtree City, Georgia 30269"

Manual says that the remote is for setting temperature.
When you turn on hot water spigot, tankless water heater will heat the water to the set point temperature.
If water heater is not set up to use remote, then tankless unit will heat to 140 degrees F.
"With the MCC-45-4US remote control installed the water temperature is adjustable from 96
to 180°F. The water temperature cannot be set to a temperature other than 140°F
without the use of the MCC-45-4US remote control unit. If you require a temperature
other than 140°F you must install the MCC-45-4US remote control unit."

"Error messages are displayed on the remote control units, simplifying service calls."

Page 9 of manual shows hot to set temperature using remote.
Water taps must be shut off to set temperature.
Circulating pump must be turned off.
"Simply press the H or C button until desired temperature is displayed"
"green in-use indicator will display"

If your unit is not working, the manual says to contact local plumber.

I have an AE 125, I have to reset the third tank (press the little black button on the top) about every two weeks. Any idea why this occurs?

Thermal overload. The unit can produce temps of 140 deg. F. It should never be set that high. I am sure the temperature dial is set at max and you are cooking the coil in the copper element. The mineral in your water has likely damaged the element. You can try turning down the temp to about 115 deg f (use a meat thermometer at the faucet). Good Luck.

Only heats water to 1oo degrees and temp on remote is set at 140 ?

I just changed mine today with help from Rheem support as the manual had a typo error.

You should be able to increse to 120 max as default. However if you want to change to 140, you will have to perform the following as detailed in the manual ...

- Turn off the power.
- Remove the cover.
- There is a dip switch on the controller board. Flip dip switch #4 to "ON". Your remotw will start flashing.
- Press SW2 on the controller board for at lease a couple of seconds (The manual states SW1 which is incorrect)
- Flip dip swich #4 back to "OFF"
- close cover
- Turn on heater ... you should be able to adjust up to 140.
