There is a black wire extending from the switch, what is it connected to?

SOURCE: Wiring to a 3 single pole combination switch

run 14-2 wire to power switches, then run one 14-3 wire and one 14-2 up to fixture..you will have an extra neutral but its okay... just tie all nuetrals together....this gives you the needed 3 hot wires!

Depends on whether you want the pilot to glow when the circuit is live (the main light is on) or to glow when the circuit is off. (The switch can be used either way, and I have used this switch in both configurations at different places.)

The wiring diagram is on the inside of the box.

In indicates that if you want the pilot light to glow when the circuit is off, then you only need two wires (the live and the return, usually colored black and white, respectively). However, you also need a ground. The instructions say that you need the ground for safety (and probably legal code) reasons, but I suspect that, without the ground, the pilot light won't work in this configuration.

However, if you want the pilot light to glow when the circuit is on, you probably need a three wire configuration (plus the ground).

well lets see on one side you should have two brass screws that would be to interupt your lead to the fixture then you either have a brass and silver screws on the other side or you have black and white wires the black or brass is always hot the silver or white is neutral does that answer your question if not hit me back with a description of what your switch looks like

I have 120Volt cooper 277 pilot light switch here in my office.
Dang instruction sheet shows wiring for all kinds of cooper devices.
EXCEPT pilot light switch.

So I tested with multimeter and came up with following:
Key to any wiring device is color of screws.
Hot from breaker box always goes to dark-colored screws.
Neutral always goes to silver-colored screws.
Brass screws are for Hot wires from breaker or Hot going to Load
Green screw - ground

I want to put a toggle switch to turn my fan on,,,,,, i have main line coming in and i have another 2 wire with ground to the fan cieling ,,,,what wires do i attach to the switch thank you


Assuming you are referring to a standard single pole switch and a 120 volt ceiling fan. The main incoming wire consists of a black, a white and a bare ground. The outgoing wire consists of a black, a white and a bare ground. First make sure the power is off. Then you will connect the two white wires together with an approved wire connector and fold them in to the switch box. Next twist the two bare ground wires together and use an approved wire connector (Greenie). Allow one of the bare ground wires to extend out through the hole in the greenie. this bare ground will attach to the green screw on the switch. Next take the black incoming wire and attach it to one of the two screws on the side of the switch. Then take the outgoing black wire and attach it to the other screw on the side of the switch. Encircle the switch with electrical tape covering the screws. Install the switch in to the switch box. Install the cover plate and then turn on the power. The fan should then turn on and off with the wall switch.

Trying to connect a Tork A530 MW timer to a spa tub pump


  1. The white wire (neutral) in your feed cable from the electric panel should be connected to the white (neutral) wire going to the pump.
  2. This switch is wired in 'series' in the hot (black wire) leg. That means one black timer wire connects to the black wire in the feed cable from your electric panel and the other black timer wire connects to the black wire that goes out to the pump.
  3. I the diagram the switch is your timer and the light bulb is the pump. The switch is in series with the pump.

Dimmer: the green wire is for bonding (grounding or earthing) the metal face frame. Do not connect it to the black or red wires. There should be a bare or green wire coming into the box, or the box (if metal) should be grounded through a wire or metal conduit. If the box is metal and you find a bare wire connected to the box, disconnect that wire and replace it with a 6" + (i. e., long enough to extend 6" out of the box) bare wire pigtail. Connect the 6" wire and the green wire to the original bonding wire using a wire nut. The two black wires are electrically interchangeable; they connect the hot wire to the light fixture (in place of a switch).
Existing house wiring: this is a head scratcher. In US residential wiring, one might see a 3/1 non-metallic cable with a black, red and white wire plus a bare wire for bonding coming from a light fixture. This would be used in one of two ways. In one, the black would be hot, the red would be the switched wire to the light fixture, and the white would provide a neutral connection for lighting control devices that need it. In the other (possibly more applicable to your situation), the white would be marked with black tape and would serve either as the incoming hot or as the switched wire to the lighting fixture (the black would have the other function), and the red would serve as a second switched wire for a fan or other load. The wise thing to do would be to remove the lighting fixture and have a look at the other end of the cable - take special note of the connections going to the fixture(s). You are looking for the hot connection coming in to the fixture box and the switched wire going to the fixture. But two black wires? How is it possible to tell which one is which without turning on power? Is there a difference in insulation marking? Or are the connected together?
Another common configuration (and I think this is what you have) is to bring hot and neutral into the box from the branch wiring, then send the switched connection(s) out of the box, and tie the neutrals (white wires) together with a wire nut. (Look for the neutral connection inside the box; if you find one, the job is relatively simple) In this case, one of the black wires is the incoming hot (comes from the cable without the red wire but with the incoming neutral), the other black wire and the red wire go to the fixture in the other cable along with the outgoing white neutral wire. You still need to look at the fixture to find out whether it gets the black wire or the red wire. It is possible that one of the wires (most likely red) is a spare for possible use in a fan/light combination.
Once you have identified which wire is the incoming hot and the switched wire going to the fixture, connect one of the black wires on the dimmer to the hot and the other black wire from the dimmer to the switched wire. What you do with remaining wire depends on what is done with it at the fixture box. If it is an unconnected spare, tape over the end (if stripped) and push it back into the box so it doesn't accidentally poke into a wire not and become energized. If it is connected in parallel with one of the other wires (unlikely), do the same at the dimmer box end. If it is connected to another load (probably a fan), consider replacing the dimmer box with a double gang box and adding a separate switch for the fan (do not run the fan on the dimmer!).
If you have any doubt about what you find, you should hand this job over to a professional electrician. There are a couple of ways to get into trouble with this, especially if the person who originally wired the fixture didn't follow the electrical code. The worst case is you connect the two switched wires to the dimmer and leave the hot wire open and exposed inside the box, and it comes into contact with a metal part in the box. This is potentially dangerous and destructive.

I have a light switch with 3 wires that have to be hooked to it.3 black wires 3 white wires and 3 ground wires.The light switch has 1 place for the black 1 place for white and 1 place for ground.


You have 3 cables entering the box.
Each cable has black and white and ground wire.
You have a single pole switch.
The switch has 2 brass-colored screws and 1 green-colored screw.

1) One thing is certain: all the ground wires connect together and then connect to green screw on switch.

2) After that, we are guessing without more information.
Add a comment.

3) What does the switch control?

4) If the switch controls a hallway light, and there is another switch for the same light: then you have wrong switch. You need 3-way switch. Buy 3-way switch and re-post question at fixya.

5) If switch controls a bath fan-light combo, repost question at fixya.

6) If the switch controls a regular light, and no other switch is involved: then the following information might work. Or you need to do testing and re-post another question at fixya.

-White wires probably connect together and are covered with a wire nut.

-Then two black wires connect to one brass screw and 1 black wire connects to other brass screw.

-But which black wire?

-Only one of the black wires has power from circuit breaker. That is hot wire.
-Hot wire connects to 1st brass screw on switch. Either screw.

-And then connect one of the other black wires to 2nd brass screw. Turn on power and see if light turns on.
-Try other black wire same way.
-The black wire(s) that turn on lights on should be left connected to 2nd brass screw.
-If one black wire did not turn on lights, then that wire probably connects to 1st brass screw along with hot wire.

Have 01 harley wideglide. have placed 4 led lights with 6 lights per light each light has 1- 2 connectorwire red&black, tied al reds together, same for blacks. i can put reds straight to 12vdc,and...


You have to wire your switch in series with the lights. First, to make it simplier, use a two-pronged single pole single throw switch. Run a red wire from the battery to one of the prongs on the swith. Run another red wire from the other prong on the switch to the red wires of the LED's, Gound the black wires from the LED's. Now, when you turn the switch on, current will flow from the battery through the switch to the LED's and on to ground. I'd also put a fuse inline between the switch and the battery.

I am trying to install utilitech 7 day in-wall timer. Their are 3 switches in box controlling different fixtures. The old switch had black connected and a black looped to the next switch. How do I connect...


1) Wires in box:
Black looped to to next switch is Black hot wire
Other Black goes to fixture

2) Connect timer wires
Black timer wire goes to Black hot
Red (or Blue) timer wire goes to fixture
White wire connects to white neutral wires (usually connected together with wire nut and pushed to back of box)
Green goes to bare ground wire

Replacing a pull chain 3-way ceiling fan light switch


OK .. the thick black and white are the power for the fan , are there also white wires on the lamp sockets ..??
The thick black wire should connect to the black wire on the switch.
The small black wires connect to the red and blue wire on the switch .. two small black wires each .. that should give you a position for 2 lights , and 4 lights, on the step switch .. but there should be white wires from the lamp sockets connected to the thick white from the fan .

Installation Problem


Switches always connect to hot (black) wires. In some cases you may find a white wire with the end taped black denoting it is serving as a hot (black) wire. Or you may find a white wire connected to the switch. If that's the case, the prior electrician did not properly mark the wire and it should be marked as a black wire. Wrap the end with black electrical tape after disconnecting.

Attach the red or positive wire to a 5 amp circuit breaker. If the unit is connected directly to the boat’s battery, include a 2 amp in-line fuse. (In-line fuses are available at most marine supply stores.) The power cable includes a smaller "shield" wire. Connect this to a good ground.

Extending the Power Cable
If you need to extend the power wiring by more than 10 feet, use a larger wire size. This will allow the wires to deliver the correct voltage in spite of the longer wire distance. For runs of 20 to 35 feet, use #14 AWG cable. If you extend the power wiring, be sure all electrical connections are solid and durable. Soldering is the best way to make these connections. Insulate all connections using heat-shrink tubing or electrical tape. You may also use crimp connectors or a terminal strip, but be sure to use good-quality marine-grade parts.
