Charging control system has failed and is overcharging the battery. Probably the alternator diode, not sure if it's a replacement part on this model, you may need to replace the complete unit.

SOURCE: I have CraftsmanLT1000 lawn tractor, Smokes heavily.

Many times a dirty air filter will cause this on this style of engine. When the filter is plugged, it creates a 'rich' fuel condition, and the engine smokes heavily, the excess carbon is drawn into the air filter, and plugs it even more.

check spark plugs, air filter, fuel filter, choke linkages (for full choke/no choke operation) and crankcase oil.

Crankcase oil can become fuel contaminated, thus overfilling the crankcase and filling the crankcase breather with raw oil/fuel, and this is drawn into the air filter, plugging it, and starting this senerio.

If there is fuel in the crankcase oil, drain completely, and refill with fresh oil. Then you need to look towards the carb for an inlet needle sticking, broken, worn.

My 10 year battery smoke alarm has been sounding every 10 minutes. It is one month old and there's no fire. What's wrong?

Hi Mary Ann:
I'd start by changing the battery and see what happens.
If it still sounds every 10 minutes then either it is defective or there is something in the area where it is located that is setting it off.
Is it a combination CO2 as well as smoke?
Possible safety hazard.
Last option is to take it back to where you purchased it for exchange.
Hope this helps.
Cheers.

Massey Ferguson 256 won't start

Hi Dan:
Looks like a diesel tractor, not a doll or playset.
Some history woud help:
- Did you just get this machine?
- Was it running OK and just quit?
- Any smoke from the exhaust when you try to start it?
- Slowed to a stop or loud mechanical BANG?
My Diesels are normally REALLY reliable and only quit (or won't run) for a few reasons
- No fuel
- Bad/contaminated fuel
- Weak battery (Gotta have power to get them to start)
- Bad injectors
- Bad injector pump
The old Case 450 track loader, even with new cylinders and pistons, needs a squirt of starter fluid into the air intake when it's cold.

TO-30 quit running, puff of smoke from electrical? Won't turn over

It is possible to have the solenoid go bad but not while the tractor is running as it is only used to engage the starter. It sounds like the wires to the starter is shorted out. I would run a hot wire to the solenoid from the battery to the solenoid and see if it will start. Just be sure everything is grounded. If the ground cable on the battery is ok you should not have a problem with running a hot wire to the solenoid. Just touch the hot wire to the starter and then release it when the starter engages. Hope this helps.

White smoke coming out of mower

It sounds as though you are losing power (electrical power); see if charging the battery fully allows it to run longer or if charging the battery helps.

My mower quit. I changed the coil and it started

Sounds to me as if the replaced coil might of fried when you shut the tractor off, several older lawn tractors have a coil that has just one wire going to them and this is grounded out by the key switch to shut the tractor down what happens is when the key switch gets warn it sometimes will feed 12 vdc or battery positive power to the coils instead of shorting it out in which case when you replace a coil in a lawn tractor it is best to replace the ignition switch along with the coil. If this is not a electrical problem it could be as simple as a plugged fuel filter that juat happens to let enough fuel thru as it sits to run for a little while but not enough to run fulltime. Hope this Helps, Don
