Question about NetGear WGT634U Router (wgt634uk)

1 Answer

Wireless will not work on my WGT634U

I have no issues with the wired portion of my WGT634U router. My problem is that it has been moved around so much that I don't think that it understands which is the master computer that dictates the configuration versus the others that are simply satellites. I have had the same issues with four other NetGear rounters. Basically, if I run into this problem, I just go buy another one. Well too expensive at this point. Can you provide me with some coaching. I would really like to do my work in front of the TV watching the game versus being stuck in my office. LOL.. Many thanks for any hints you may be able to lend me. Sean

You may ask someone to help you change frequency channels.

there might be something also near you that is running on the same frequency/ devices in the states usually are on channel 6.

so go ahead and try changing channel

I have a laptop running vista ultimate 32 bit version and i am having problems connecting to the internet. It says I am connected but will browse the internet. Are the troubleshooting steps the same as...

The steps are the same though the menus and screens you go through to do them are a bit different from XP. Pretty much all the software steps you can do are covered by the troubleshooter in vista and 7 though, so if you have ran that without a solution, then the likelyhood that it's a setting in windows causing the issue is fairly low.

First I would confirm that your connection is actually working. If you are attempting to connect the laptop with wireless it is not uncommon for routers to stop responding correctly to wireless clients, or even for the wireless portion of a router to die while wired connections still work perfectly. Try plugging the laptop in with a wire and see if you still have the same problem. If wired worked but wireless did not, then unplug your router, wait about 30 seconds and plug it back in. Retry the wireless and if it still does not work then a replacement router will be required to use wireless, though you could get a second cable and use it wired until you do replace it.

I have no connection to the internet going through the wireless or the wired portion of my d-link DI-524 router ,I only have a local connection . Is this repairable or is the router FRIED and needs to be...

try rebooting your cable modem by unplugging it then after 15 seconds plug it back in. let it come up, then reboot your router and wait til it comes up. If it still doesn't connect then there may be an issue with the router. I'm guessing the cable modem is OK since you were able to post here. I was going to tell you to hard wire your computer to the cable modem as well.

Netgear wireless wgr614 is configured and the ports wired connected and is working ok while wireless portion the laptop running vista says connection is limited and unable to browse

If you connect the computer to the router , it works.
That means the wired connection is OK.
Open the set up page of the router check the wireless settings of the router.
I think your network is secured and you are not typing the correct network key.
just open the router set up and check the wireless settings .

We just tried to secure our wireless motorola sbg900 and now the wireless portion doesn't work. We have to use an ethernet cable. How do we reverse this and still make it secure?

To change any wireless settings on the router, you will need to make wired connections to the router.
If you change the wireless settings on the wireless laptop it will drop the connection because you are changing a wireless setting.

Router issues in my apartment.

When to moved into the penthouse, there are more walls between the wireless router and the laptop in the bedroom. The walls are probably reinforced concrete walls which will stop or weaken the radio waves penetrating into different rooms. When you lived in a house this was not a problem.
The only way to solve this problem is to move the wireless router near an opening such as a door and move the laptop as close as possible to the wireless router to get a better signal strength.
The outer way is to install a wireless repeater or connect a long network cable to the router and the laptop.

Internet connection-Linksys Wireless B

Did you move the router out of range of the computer? It sounds like you put it back where it was but I just thought I'd ask.

Otherwise, use your wired connection to check the router settings. It is possible that the wireless settings defaulted due to the disconnection. You can either set the router to match your wireless computer if you can remember, or just set up a fresh wireless connection between the two.

Connecting laptops to wireless Router

Go into the admin portion of the router by typing the ip address in internet explorer. By default your router should by or

the default user id is admin

the default password is linksys or admin

go to the wireless section set the signal for mixed and assign an ID that your laptops can recognize when scanning.

By default your channel id should be 6. If the notebooks aren't communicating set the channel id to 6 on the network cards.

Once thats connected then you can work on your wep encyption.

Linksys will not allow any admin work on their routers performed unless a computer is on a wired connection. Only the wired computer can do the admin work.

Wireless router dropping then disappeared

There are two possible generic reasons I have found in reviewing internet posts.

One claims there may be a windows issue with hiding the SSID (or router name) and enabling WEP or WPA secure/encrypted wireless connections and random disconnections of service to the wireless adapter. The recommended solution is not to hide the SSID (or router name) and maintain the WEP or WPA secure/encrypted service.

Another claims that there may be an "overload" of requirements on a specific wireless channel in your area (sometimes by non routers such as wireless phones). Many routers default to channel 6. I you have a wireless monitor on a PC that shows routers and their channel assignments nearby -- if everyone is on channel 6 you may want to move to channel 1 or 11 and see if your device works better. There are some wireless routers with capability for 108mbs transmission rates that actually transmit on two channels at once that could be affecting your response so if channel 1 does not work try channel 11 or vice versa.

Cant get online or pick up a wireless network?

A couple of issues and questions

First generally a wireless router in installed onto a network either to the ISP's modem or to another router that is connected to an ISP's modem it is not connected on the wan side to a computer (unless that computer is acting as a firewall or proxy server to the internet). Computers are generally connected with a wire to the (optional) switch portion of a wireless router or wireless connection.

Have you tried testing with a computer wired to the router to assure internet access is possible without worrying about wireless issues?

If you are considering encrypting the wireless router did you test it unencrypted first to assure the unencrypted radio transmissions work?

Is the wireless communication encrypted for other computers you own and possibly not for the HP you are now trying to connect?

Are you sure the distance between the wireless router and the garage is not an issue. Perhaps you could test and configure the connection in the room with the router and when it is working move it to the garage.

According to the product specs for the HP Pavilion it has built in wireless B & G you did not include the router manufacturer and model does it operate on the either wireless B or G?
