I assume that you are using a laptop. Make sure that your trackpad is enabled. There is usually a button near it on the newer laptops.

SOURCE: my aspire1 has blank screen with just the pointer

Your laptop may need defragmenting. It is possible for everything to lock up if the hard drive is too badly fragmented.

Try starting up in safe mode. Press F8 shortly after switching on then select start in safe mode.

The defragmenter is in the START MENU / PROGRAMS / ACCESSORIES / SYSTEM TOOLS.

Select defragment.

It may take a few minutes to a few hours.

It is necessary to regularly defragment (two or three times a week), many people aren't aware that the operating system will definately slow down or crash if you dont.

Hope this helps.

SOURCE: touchpad stopped working cannot move

Hi,

Just check for the key combination on your key board (ex. Fn + F4 or F5..depends on the what key was designed for the touchpad), the touchpad might be locked.

If it is not locked, reinstall the touchpad driver, but it this still doesn't work, boot to Safe Mode to check if it does. Touch pad still not responding in Safe Mode would mean hardware failure.

Hope this helps.

Windows start bar has completely gone

Sympton

You cannot see the taskbar (which contains the "Start" button) anywhere on your desktop.

Causes

  1. The taskbar may be hiding at the bottom of the screen after being accidentally resized.

  2. If the presentation display was changed, the taskbar may have moved off of the visible screen (Windows 7 and Vista only).

  3. The taskbar may be set to "Auto-hide" (Windows XP with Service Pack 2 only).

Solutions

  1. Put the mouse pointer on the bottom border of your screen.

    • If the pointer turns into a double-arrow doublearrow.gif, click and drag upwards.
    • If your taskbar isn't hiding at the bottom of the screen, try moving the mouse to the right, left, and top edges, looking for the double-arrow.

  2. Press the Windows logo key and the P key on your keyboard to bring up the presentation display mode options.

    • Make sure "Computer Only" is selected.
    • Use the arrow keys to toggle between options and Enter to select the correct display mode.

  3. Press the Windows key on the keyboard to bring up the Start Menu

    • Right-Click on the taskbar and select Properties.
    • Toggle the 'Auto-Hide the taskbar' checkbox and click Apply.
    • If it is now checked, move the cursor to the bottom, right, left, or top of the screen and the taskbar should re-appear.
    • Repeat step three to return to your original setting.

  3. Use the ARROW keys to select the Keyboard icon, and then press ENTER.
  4. Press SHIFT+TAB, press RIGHT ARROW, and then press RIGHT ARROW to select the Pointer Activity tab.
  5. Press TAB three times, and then press SPACE BAR to clear the Snap pointer to default button in dialog boxes check box.
  6. Press TAB twice, and then press ENTER.
  7. Close Control Panel.
  8. Download and install the 11p32upd.exe file from the Microsoft Download Center.

My touchpad jumps around or the arrow won't move

Keep the palms of your hands away from your touchpad.
Just being "close" to the touchpad is enough to move the mouse-pointer.
