Question about Brother IntelliFax-2820 Laser Fax

1 Answer

I want to replace the toner unit.

I have been asked to make a unit work. I only have a general operation document, which tells me nothing. I need to remove the drum unit, but it seems to be stuck. I have found what looks like a release lever, but it won't move. Can you help me?

Re: I want to replace the toner unit.

Release lever is for releasing TONER out of drum not for releasing drum... drum should pull out slightly up and forward with toner attached fully. If it is stuck then their may check if a  sheet of a4 is stuck and holding it in.

Light printing on right side of page.

These guys have a service manual available for download for $9.95; Sorry couldn't find a free one. There are others with the manual also but all more expensive (up to $45). If you need any help with any of the procedures in there, please ask again - I think you are right about the charge wire. Hope this helps :)

Going through toner too fast. Changed toner two days ago. Asking to be replaced and have to shake toner. Yes, we are sure it was a new one :-)

TN -430 toner cart. 2500 copy count.
TN -460 toner cart. 4000 copy count

These are the two units that fit the 4100 modles .
You must be receving all lot faxs to use up the toner that fast.

You can go in to setup and change the toner to use less. Will need service book that came with the unit. Hope this helps

Add Toner message will not go away

Unplug the unit and remove the trays, toner, etc. stripping it down to the base unit. Look inside the fax and look to see if the drum has dumped large amounts of loose toner into the inside of the printer. (you can put you hand in there if you really can't tell) If it has, you will need to get the inside cleaned out before the sensors will work correctly. This is really hard and you will need to find the best method to clean it out. But I can tell you what not to do and what works for me...

1) Compressed air is a bad idea. Tried it and it just throws up a huge toner cloud that covers the whole office and every sensor in the printer with toner dust. then you throw it away.

2) Disassembling and scrubbing down the printer is slow but works pretty well.

3) Spraying an alcohol based spray cleaner around the sensor areas works sometimes if you avoid spraying greased components and is pretty quick.

The scree reads change drum soon. what does it mean

The drum is the part of the unit that actually does the transfer of the toner onto the paper. Each toner cartridge does about 2,000 pages and the drum needs to be replaced with the ~6th toner cartridge change (varies with use). Order part DR-250 from Brother or any office supply place that would carry the part.

To replace (wait until print quality decreases or it reads change drum now and stops working). Turn off the unit and let it cool. Close the document tray and the extension and open the top cover. Remove the drum carefully and place it where the toner will not spill. Remove the toner cartridge (if it is still good) and set it aside to put in the new drum.
Wrap the old cartridge up and dispose of properly (not in the domestic trash). Keep the new drum out of the light (keep it sealed until needed) as much as possible. Insert the toner cartridge in the new drum. Then insert the unit into the Fax machine. (Hold by the handles) Close the top cover and the starter sheet should be ejected by the machine.

I hope this helps.

Faxed documents come out with black streaks on them

Clean the corona wire on your drum unit. It should be a blue tab on the top of the cartridge that you can slide from side to side. Make sure that the blue tab returns to the starting position (there should be an arrow on the tab that will match up with an arrow on the drum unit). If this doesn't work, replacing the drum unit should fix it. Drum units are only meant to last ~4 toner section replacements.

Gear making a grinding noise

Not too good news I'm afraid. It sound like the fuser gear has failed. Generally the fuser unit (hot section or hot rollers in the back) need to be replaced. Usually when the gear has worn or failed the fuser rollers are also worn and need to be replaced. The gear can be replaced seperately but is a very risky operation and usually results in parts in the fuser unit falling appart due to age and wear, so it is best done as a unit. If possible do not run the machine as it can cause damage to gears around the fuser unit. The best option is to find out how much a fuser unit and labour to fit would be at your local service centre.

Printing problems

There could be a couple reasons. One, it may be the person sending you the fax that has a problem with their machine. The easiest way to find out is, put a clean document in the feeder and make a copy. If the copy is clean then you know it is not a problem with your machine. The other possibility is that when Brother sells these new machines they only provide you with a starter drum and toner. Many times the drum may have defects and the machine does not detect these so you will not get a message telling you to replace it. If you do determine its your machine I would start by replaceing the drum unit first, then the toner.
Good luck
