SOURCE: Waste ink absorber
hi i am a certiffied Canon repair tech for this model. this is true this will reset the error but doing so without replacing the waste asorber pad in the bottom of the machine will cause your machine to backup waste ink into the the printing area of the machine and will start smuging ink on the page. the waste absorber is fairly cheap but the labor varies from shop to shop. there are independent Canon repair shops throughout the world. you can call 1-800-ok- canon or look on the canon website. hope this help to clairify.

5100 says the carriage is not moving all the way across the paper path. There could be grease or ink on the encoder strip, the clear strip behind the carriage. Or a small paper scrap inside stopping the carriage.
