Brother HL-4040CDN printer colors are off, tend to be pink

There could be a number of causes for the problems your describing, but one of the most common causes of discoloration and issues with toner is a faulty ribbon sensor. A broken sensor will be unable to accurately read the ribbon and apply the correct color. I hope this helps

Printer printing yellow

Try printing a document in BLACK ONLY and see if the issue still persists. If it does not manifest, then the problem may be with the color cartridge.
Re-install the printer drivers/applications before proceeding.
If your printer has some kind of "print head clean" option (prints out a test page in a way that it washes out the print heads with its own ink), use it. It works. If not, then the color cartridges may either be contaminated or running low. How old are the cartridges & has the printer been left unused for a period of time?
You can also try using the color cartridge on a similar printer, if possible, or use a spare color cartridge to isolate the cause of the discoloration.
If you are not receiving notifications that the cartridge is running low, then it may well be contaminated or it really is drying up but the printer is just not reading it correctly.
In the event that the spare cartridge performs the exact same way, then the printer itself will have to be checked for defects.

Apparently there is a bug that HP is not fixing. Following is not a solution, only HP can solve this problem but a "workaround" for the time being, allowing you to print the file as image. Keep in mind that the printing will take longer time, because the file is output as bitmap, and that this way of printing it's not good enough for color proofing of any sort.

Check in the specific software Print dialog window, if you can print the file as image. Sometimes the controls are in the advanced options. In Acrobat, check the box for Discolored Background Correction in the PostScript tab of the Print dialog window, and if that doesn't help, check Print as Image check box.

We have a Xerox Phaser 8500N printer. The yellow is printing out a dingy gold. I hav checked the yellow print blocks and there is plenty.

What it essentially boils down to is that you're not printing enough color. The blocks are melted into a holding bin and will discolor over time. To correct this, you will need to purge the color that is "stale". Go to this link and download the pdf for your color (I would recommend downloading all four to keep on hand). You'll want to open the PDF and print 10 to 20 copies until the bad ink is replaced with fresh ink. You'll notice the color change as the ink is purged.

When printing pictures, they are discolored

You are running low on your color ink cartridge. It cannot mix the primary colors right anymore and the color images start getting a pink-purple tinge to them. Get a new set of cartidges and install them and this should fix the problem fine. Hope this helps.
