Try cleaning the ground inside the welder. and make sure you have a good power supply ie. power cord. check the transformer for continuity and clean all the contacts ( are you sure the power inverter diodes are only passing current one way and are not "open" )

SOURCE: hypertherm plasma cutter making weird air sound from inside unit

Open the cover (only after a day of not being plugged in).
Check the airline that comes in through the back of the case.
The air line has either fallen off or has a hole in it.

If you are a technician and don't mind working with thousands of volts of electricity that is inside the case, then and only then can you plug it in. Safety First. Rember the voltages inside this unit are lethal. It will not give you a second chance.

If you feel you are qualified, then plug it in and start it up, use it as normal, while at first watching from a 2 meter distance, you may immediately see and/or hear where the noise is comming from.

DO NOT under any circumstances put your hand or hands inside the box while it is live.

Try running a WOODEN stick (at least a foot long) along the length of the airline inside the case and around the valve as it enters the case. The sound should change in pitch when you find it.

If you think you have found it, DO NOT touch anything inside, until you have both DSCONNECTED THE UNIT from the power source and WAIT ONE DAY before putting hands inside the unit. Any storred or residual energy will have discharged by this time, making it safe to work on. Safety first. The voltages inside are lethal. This aplies to all Plasma Cutters. Good luck.

Changes between AC and DC voltage at the electrodes.

Q: What Type Of Stick Welder Works Best For All-Around Use?

A: A welder with an AC/DC output, whether its an electric arc machine like Miller\'s Thunderbolt or a gas engine drive like Miller\'s Bobcat.

DC welding offers advantages over AC for most Stick applications, including: easier starts; fewer arc outages and sticking; less spatter/better looking welds; easier vertical up and overhead welding; easier to learn "how to weld" and a smoother arc. DC reverse polarity (electrode positive) provides about 10 percent more penetration at a given amperage than AC, while DC straight polarity (electrode negative) welds thinner metals better.

Q: Does An AC Output Have Any Advantages?

A: Yes, if you need to weld on material that\'s become magnetized from friction, such as when hay, feed or water constantly rub against a steel part. A DC output won\'t work because of "arc blow," where the magnetic field blows the molten filler metal out of the weld puddle. Because an AC output alternates between polarities, it enables you to weld magnetized parts.

Lincoln electric ac/dc arc welder will not arc

Check the dial indicator. Sometimes if someone changes the amps while welding, there will be a break in the coil. It will work at a different setting as long as you are away from the break.

I just bought a AC225 stick welder, there are two cables coming out of the machine, I don't know which one is the work cable and which one is the holder cable?

it doesn't matter which one you use because it's alternating current, normally the longer one is your electrode holder cable so you have more cable to move around with, but either way it will work, if it's a D.C. welder then all your doing is using reverse polarity and in some cases welding this type of welding is superior to straight polarity

Welding machine stops working after a few minutes of welding.

there is probley nothing wrong its called duty cycle.which means that if you are welding long periods or welding at max amps the welder will kickout to cool down.Look on your unit for the tag that tells imformation about your unit.It will show something like 30% duty cycle so that means you can weld 3 minutes at full power before the unit shuts down.
