A bit is a computer term which can be either 1 or zero. so a 40 bit password would be something like 1100011000011101100110010100101011001010 or any other combination of 40 1's and 0's.. familiarity with Binary numbers would help here.. not easy to remember though.
Hexadecimal is another method used to help simplify binary notation and we use the digits 0-9 and the letters A-F to represent a grouping of 4 binary digits or 4 bits. so the 40 digit string above could be represented as 10 Hexadecimal digits as follows
C61D99499ACA - which is a little easier to remember. ASCII is a standard by which we use 8 bits ( 8 binary digits or 2 hexadecimal digits ) to represent the numbers, letters and symbols on our keyboard... using a 5 letter password such as Bird? ( including the question mark) would be the equivalent of the following hexadecimal representation
42 69 72 64 3F or the binary/bit representation

Hope this helps.

I am visiting my brother in Singapore and when I try to access his wireless router with my old Dell Latitude 620, I get an error message that says "The network password needs to be 40bits or 104bits...

This issue is cause by old computers trying to access a router that uses a password configuration that the old computer doesn't understand. It will never work on his router as it is setup right now for that particular computer.

You have to either change the router password type to an old type like WEP. It's not as secure but makes things work none the less.

I cannot connect to the internet on wireless on my Dell precision M50. When I enter the WEP key I get the following message - 'The network password needs to be 40bits or 104bits depending on your network...

You are trying to connect to a wireless network that has a password (referred to as protection).

Dont worry about the "bits" or the network configuration parts. - thats all overkill.

The long and short of it is that you need a password to log onto your router.

It will either be 5, 10, 13, or 26 characters in length.

If you do not have the password, you can post the version of the router (model number and brand) up here, and someone can help you reset it so that you can put the password into your computer.

First I would check to make sure the "WEP" key is the right number of characters. 5-or-10-or-13-or-26

Can't connect with microsoft MN-510 using WPA

This means that you have to enter the network key into your computer in order to connect to the network,
If you enter the password as hexadecimal characters, you must type exactly 10 characters (5 bytes) for a 40-bit key (valid characters are 0-9 and a-f), or exactly 26 characters (13 bytes) for a 104-bit key.
If you typed any number of characters other than 10 or 26, or any character that is not a hexadecimal digit, this is interpreted as ascii string.
In this mode, each character is a byte by itself.
So, valid length of the string in this case is either 5 or 13 characters.
If this condition is not met, the string can't be accepted as a valid password.
Please check carefully what you type. (Letter O instead if zero, or small L instead of 1 etc.)

If you don't know the key, you have to connect to the router via a cable and copy the key from there - or ask your Dad to give you the information. He will have it, because he has a working connection.

If you have any more questions or this is not clear ot you, just come back here and leave a comment - I'm happy to help.

Cannot access the internet with my laptop using belkin wireless

I assume that your "hard wired" connection is working -if you have one?
When this connection was configured, you had to assign a security password, that you should have marked down. If you don't remember what this is, you'll have to reset the router with the reset button (usually on the back) and you'll need a paperclip or similar to access it. Press it for 5 seconds or so, then you'll have to reconfigure you're network settings from scratch.

Connecting to internet

The network key is with the wireless router that you have. When you moved, your router reestablished itself with a new connection at a new location, and more than likely set a new key. Try reconfiguring your router with a new network key, then configure the laptop with the new key, and it should connect.
