Belts should never have a twist to them.

SOURCE: Cassette Tape Deck Problem

Unit may have worn belts that are slipping. All cassette player belts are subject to deterioration even if recently installed. You may try ordering the belts yourself and have a service tech install them. The tech that installed belts 9 months ago may have used used belts. Although dishonest, it is common.

SOURCE: I have a TEAC reel to reel stereo tape deck, Model

That's a rarity but easily fixed. Before pulling anything apart spray some penetrating oil (WD-40) or similar into a small container. Then with a cotton bud soak the tip in the penetrating oil and apply it to the base of the capstan where the bearing is. Allow this to sit for a few hours and even repeat it if it looks to have soaked the oil up. NOW, with the power lead out of the wall socket remove the top cover of the deck. You will have to remove a few knobs and mode switches too. Now see if you can rotate the capstan flywheel by hand. It might take a bit of pressure to get it to turn but once it does keep going until it starts to rotate freely.

By the way, check that the capstan drive belt is in one piece and not slipping first.

If it's running freely then reassemble the cover and other pieces tyhen put a few drops of light oil on the capstan bearing (sewing machine oil is ideal) Do this because penetrating oil will dry out after a while. That should fix it.

I'm assuming you know exactly how to thread the tape through the machine. Don't forget to position the stop lever on the upper side of the tape otherwise nothing will operate. If you are unsure about that write back and I will elaborate.

After belt replacement and head cleaning it sounds like a warbled and slow running tape deck

Belts are not the only things needed as this question points out. The capstan bearing needs oil, the motor bearings need oil, the Pinch Roller pressure needs to be right and the pinch roller clean. Capstan shaft has to have some grip and can not be glazed when it is suppose to be matte surface to start. What is the model number?

Telex Copyette 1-2-3: Master well wraps tape around the capstan.

Tape wrapping on a capstan shaft is commonly due to a sticky pinch roller or capstan shaft but is also because the take-up reel table does not provide enough torque or tension to gather up the tape. The Teac MTT160 cassette is a test tool we use to determine what the deck is doing torque wise. Telex probably has something similar. I worked with a guy who worked at Telex in the tape business- He did not talk about them much but he did say they had a lot of belts in them. Maybe you are just dealing with a belt that needs to be replaced. Lubrication also tends to be needed at every rotation point as well. That would include reel tables. I hope this gives you some help as Telex repairmen are getting to be like Hens teeth.

Thaks for helping. My tape deck door has suddenly stopped working. the tape is inside and when i turn on the wpower there is a clicking sound. it is a TEAC AD-500 CD player/reverse cassete deck

Without physically looking at the cassette deck myself, I cannot be 100% sure the tape is wrapped around the pinch roller and capstan. The capstan is the chrome rod which the rubber pinch roller pushes to regulate the speed of the tape moving across the head. However it is approximately a 90% chance the take up reel for the tape stopped working from a bad tape or a loose belt which drives the tape take up reel. The clicking sounds like it could be the auto reverse solenoid because it thinks the tape has reached the end of play. The fun part is to remove the tape which you may have to disassemble the front panel if you cannot gain access to the tape from the top or bottom. You will need to cut the tape and remove it from the capstan and pinch roller to open the cassette door. Sometimes you can remove the capstan to free the tape. Once you have cleaned all the tape out of the unit make sure the belt for the take-up is good. If it is glazed, cracked, loose or broken order a belt. Clean all the pulleys and capstan and replace the belt. Your unit should be functional after the above procedure.

Instructions for Teac Tascam 32-2B belt replacement. I have had this Reel to Reel Tape Recorder for a number of years and the belts have now perished. I have purchased replacement belts on ebay but could...

Ebay is the worse place to get belts- why do I know this? Well, as a servicer I am constantly replacing belts that are from E bay when clients can not get their decks to work with those wrong belts. While the counter belt is not critical the capstan belts are in a dual capstan system. The 32-2B is a X10 derivative so it will need proper servicing to work well. I am in the Chicago area and work on decks all the time as Skywave Tape Deck Repair just google it.

Need capstan belt for reel to reel -tascam-dx-44,pls help.

The model is not a DX44 as that is a dBx unit attached to either a Tascam 44 or 40-4. The tape deck model would need to be determined and when that is done go to Marrs Communications and order the belt kit for that machine and you will get the capstan and counter belt.

The capstan drive roller on my tape deck fell apart. Spindle is .0975" dia. Pinch roller is .862" dia. All other belts and rollers seem OK. Where can I find a replacement capstan roller? Thanks.

You need to locate the supplier of pinch rollers that will fit your tape deck. If that fails, you have a useless piece of gear. If the unit is of decent quality, you should be able to locate a supplier. You didn't include the make or model, so good luck.

Motor plays at a very slow speed

capstan belt may be failing. check this by removing lid and touch the capstan flywheel when running. if it is easily stalled/slow to come up to speed and or the belt slipping badly then belt will require replacement.
