Just buy a new tank, by the time you find the bladder(if it is a replaceable one) then struggle to put it in (only to find that you nicked it), you will have more time and money in it than it is worth.

If you have an expansion tank mounted near the water heater, it may be full. If it is full, the bladder inside the has ruptured and the tank needs replacing.

The easiest way I know of is to remove cap from air valve on top of tank and check pressure with tire gauge. If you get water out of valve then air bladder is bad and tank will need to be replaced. If you don't get water but no pressure then reinflate to 3-5 PSI. Hope this helps. Thanks

if you have a captive air expansion tank its most likely bad and leaking inside. means the rubber bladder leaked internally. cheap money and easy to replace. do not even try to test the air pressure in an old one. or try to refill it. replace it. good luck

The pump goes on and off repeatedly

The pump should only run if you are using water. If you have a leak it will cycle on and off. If it only cycling fast when you're using water, you may need an expansion tank, sometimes referred to as a bladder tank for newer style. If you have a "bladder" tank , the bladder may be leaking and lost it's air charge. This bladder will have an initial air charge, and when the pump runs it will compress the bladder even further. When the pump shuts off the bladder is compressed. When you begin to use water, mainly low flow like one faucet, the bladder will begin to expand expelling the water from the tank until the pressure drops below that of the pump pressure switch. This makes the pump start and stop fewer times.

Water leaking in basement because there is a small leak in current expansion tank. can we stop water from leaking tonight and still have water to house? and are these tanks easy to replace?

Hi,
For tonight I would set a bucket under it to cathc the water from the leak. The tank will not start to leak much worse in the next few hours...
And, no it is not hard to change the tank. Just messy....:-) Becareful though as the tank may be heavy if the bladder has ruptured...
Simply use two wrenches and unscrew the tank and then tape or dope the threads and screw the new tank back on...just that simple...make sure you get a fresh water exspansion tank and not a heating one...

Hydronic Boiler relief valve problem?

Check the pressure guage. Typically the pressure in a water boiler should not be more than 20 psi. If you are approaching 30, the relief valve is doing it's job. I would replace or adjust the automatic water feed if the pressure is high. Always replace the boiler relief valve. Tap on the expansion tank, it should sound hollow. Replace it if it is full of water. If you have one of the old expansion tank that has no bladder in it, drain it.
