Some mowers have a sensor under seat. A form of safety. The weight of the person allows it to operate properly.

I know this is an old thread but maybe I can still help someone who cares to read this far. My tractor had this same problem and I tore it apart to find the problem. These Cub Cadets are famous for belt and transaxle problems. First check drive belts. They are up under the seat from the underside of the tractor. If there is a clicking sound or it feels like it jumps out of gear then the problem is in the transaxle. You have to jack up the back of the tractor and support it, remove the rear tires and drop the transaxle. There are 8 bolts that mount it to the frame: 4 on the left side, 2 on the right, and two in the front. Being careful to remove the belts and remember how they are routed. There is a clip that holds the shift linkage in the front. Remove the linkage from the brake on the right side. Remove the pulleys off the left side and the large one in the center. The transaxle has multiple bolts holding it together. Remove all of the bolts and prepare to lift off the cover. When removing the cover be careful not to lose the little ball bearing that locates the shift fork. There is an Allen head plug and spring here that will have to be removed to reinstall this ball. After cover is removed remove the shift fork that the shift linkage hooks to. It will be worn paper thin or broken around the inner edge. I could not find the part by Google searching so went to the Cub Cadet web site. They have a chat feature so explained what I needed. she shot me a link and the shift fork was like $22.50. Much better than several hundred for a new transaxle. If you got this far and watched closely how you took things apart you shouldn't have a problem putting it back together. Don't forget to pull the plug in the front, remove the spring, insert the ball, replace the spring, reinstall the plug. Do this after the cover is on. Hope this helps someone.

Belts might look good but is there enough tension ??? If there is I would get the numbers of the transmission and do some research.

Cub Cadet LTX1040 riding mower, stalled on a high spot, after restarting, there seem to be no forward or reverse function. Blade engagement still works.

look under the mower to be sure the drive belt is still on the pulleys and not fallen of or broken. sometimes high grass or a stick can make the belt fall off the pulley causing it to do as you are saying.

Cub cadet with automatic transmission will sometimes slow to a stop. I can put it in reverse, then back in forward and it will go

look and see if the drive belts are good and not cracked or worn. that is the most common problem i have found is belts worn out.

There are 2 springs on the deck. One attaches to the cable. Where does the other one connect. There are no pictures in the manual.

It looks like in this manual there is a belt that ties the two deck spindles together the manual calls it a timing belt and looks like it is coged and there is a idler pulley that keeps this belt tight, that second spring pulls on the arm that the pulley is mounted on giving it spring tension If it is a timing belt I would look under the deck and make sure one blade is pointing forward and the other pointing sideways so they dont hit each other when passing.I have not seen anything like that sense the first Cub Cadet the made which did not have a Number because there was only one . Cub cadet ltx1040 will not go forward or reverse

they smoke most likely because you have an idler pulley locked up or your transmission is locked up...
