Question about Garden

I have a Stihl FS38 that I'm having difficulty starting. When engaging the pull cord, the cord will travel around 5-10cm before becoming 'stuck' - with a little more force it gets past this point (which feels like something is turning over because air comes out the exhaust in a puff when it does turn over), and then continues for another 5-10cm when it does the same thing, and continues this way until the cord is fully extended. The cord recoils fine so I imagine something is seized up or a bit tight in there somewhere! Can anyone give me an idea what is causing this and if its an easy fix? The brushcutter is only 2yrs old and gets used maybe once every month but I'd like to have a go at fixing it myself. Any help would be much appreciated! Cheers

Some times the plug get wet ,check your plug.

SOURCE: Pull cord on weedeater wont recoil

sounds like the spring is broken itself.there should be a hook at one end and a loop at the other end.the hook usualy breaks off but the spring looks good.replace the spring with part number..4140 190 0600 ....that is the stihl part number.let me know if this helped you...if not give me a quick mail and i'll try to help some more......

I started to take mine apart but when i loosened the 4 screws on the yoke the string rewound so ive been running it like that.

you dont say what model Stihl, lets assume its FS80/85. the torxs style screw driver is part of the tool kit supplied with the machine and includes spark plug spanner 3/4 AF, remove the four screws to release the starter assembly, the starter also retains the fuel tank, dont lose the oblong rubber insert or the tank will wobble around when assembled. if the rope wont return the end of the rewind spring may have broken off or it maybe that the spring has got so rusty its just hanging up. with the recoil off remove the centre screw (normal anti-clockwise) holding the starter away from your eyes, withdraw the pulley and inspect the spring for damage which normaly occurs at the end that engages with the pulley, if it's broken and you cant get a replacement use a pair of pliers to grip the spring about 3/4 inch from broken end, heat with blowtorch to soften and rebend into a hook to engage with the pulley, dont try to bend without softening, clean off any rust with wire wool and re-install the spring in it's housing working from the outside toward the's more of a knack than anything else and you could probably do with eleven fingers. having installed the spring make sure the rope is fully un-wound and insert the pulley into the housing turning gently until you feel the spring engage, you will know you've got it right when the pulley attempts to rewind, fit the pulley retaining screw, you will observe a notch in the outer rim of the pulley,make sure that the rope is in the notch and use it (the rope) to wind the spring about five times, check that the whole rope rewinds into the pulley, if you still have some hanging out put more turns on the spring but dont over do it. to check, gently pull on the grip until you come to the end of the rope, thats the important bit, you must come to the end of the rope before you come to the end of the spring otherwise the spring will break again.install the starter assembly by offering up and slowly pulling on the grip until you feel the pulley engage with the starter pawl. good luck.

My stihl fs 56rc weed eater turned off and now I cant pull the cord on it to start it why?

There are a couple of things that could have happened, If it has been left with fuel and oil , and left lying against a wall or something else for a while, the combustion chamber may have gotten full of oil and the piston cannot move.

The cord may be overlapped and cracked the pulley and it got stuck there. The "dogs" broke on the flywheel cover and does not engage with the part where it rotates the engine.

Both of these require that you remove the flywheel cover and/or the spark plug. When you remove the spark plug check the chamber inside to see if there is no oil inside it.
The flywheel cover where the pull cord is located, has to be removed to check why it is not engaging or if it is stuck for some reason.

Fs38 Stihl weed trimmer extremely very hard to pull with sparkplug in but no problem with no plug.

A hard pull on that unit would indicate a sheared flywheel key. The key is part of the flywheel. Check to see if there are 'rub or scrape' marks on the outside of the flywheel. Adjust coil clearance to .010". Coils on those models are normally very reliable. Use a spark tester for lawn mower engines. Preferably with a light in the center of the tester wire. If it its an adjustable tester, adjust the gap to at least .065 to 0.85". The light tester should produce a bright orange light, the adjustable tester should produce a bright blue spark. I cannot find specs on those models, as dealers use the 'light in wire' type tester.

back firing most likely caused by the flywheel key being partially sheared. air gap for coil should be around .010

My stihl fs400 strimmer starts first time and runs on full throttle then dies a few moments later starts first time and does ame thing again

inside the muffler there is a screen that gets all gummed up, take muffler assy. apart and clean screen, if you have a propane torch, this works well as you burn crud off it becomes ash and wipes or blows off. first link shows how.

Stihl chainsaw 036 will not start and cannot pull cord more than about 8 inches. feels like compression brake is on

Remove the spark plug and see if you can pull the cord though its full travel. This will help future troubleshooting. Please provide the full model number in any response.

It could be the recoil is stuck. a couple of things to check. Take the clutch and chain cover off, remove the spark plug and manually try to turn the motor over by turning the clutch. If the motor/engine is not seized, take the pull start/recoil cover off and pull on the cord to see if it will work and that the cord returns back into the recoil automatically. Don't take the nut off the inside of recoil holding the cord spool on. If the engine is not seized, and the recoil now goes in and out by pulling the start cord handle reassemble and pull over the engine a few times. This a good time to check the spark plug is working, now put the spark plug back in and start the engine. It's a good time to clean the air filter as well while the chainsaw is mostly apart and clean all oily sawdust off the chainsaw in the crevices etc..

remove the recoil cover and check the dogs that engauge the starter to the flywheel
