Small puff of smoke on startup - intermittent

I have seen this on old cars, my suspicion is that the seals on the valves are a bit worn. This allows some oil to get through during start up. Since it quits smoking, I would not be overly concerned. However, since it burns a quart every 1-2K miles, I am curious what the compression is. My Fiero does the same thing (occasional puff of smoke on start up) but does not need oil between 3,000 mile chages. It is a 2.5 liter. Here is nice tip: check compression on all cylinders, then recheck it adding a teaspoon of 2 cycle oil to the cylinders (one cylinder at a time). Some have said to use conventional oil for this, due to higher viscosity, but I always thought it might foul the spark plugs. If the compression goes up, it is ring wear, if not it is leaking through the valves.

How to replace valve seals. when cycle is on side stand for a day or two and you start engine it smokes for a few seconds

This has been an issue for ALL Goldwing's (1000, 1100, 1200, 1500, and probably 1800's). It does not hurt anything. If you center stand you cycle it will never happen. but all Goldwing's are known to let out a puff of smoke if left on the side stand. The oil may be leaking past your piston rings and not your stem seals. If you want to change your stem seals you need to put the cylinder on top dead center compression stroke, remove the spark plug, screw in an air hose from your air compressor to pressurize your cylinder, with air pressure hold the valves in place compress the valve springs with a valve spring compressor, remove the parts (washer, cotter keys, and springs), pry off the seal, pop on the new one and reassemble. It is a lot easier living with the puff of smoke, Happy Trails.

A puff of smoke when you start up indicates worn valve seals. That's why all your work didn't fix the problem and it doesn't show a code. It's a pain in the --- job that requires some specialized tools so I guess it depends on how bad it bugs you,if oyu want to fix it.

Washer emitting burning smell and smoke on fast spin

Yes, the heating element is coming on when it shouldn't. A likely cause is the pressure pot (Level sensor sender unit) being blocked with sludge. You'll find this under the machine, either screwed to the RH side of the tub, near to the front of the machine secured by three Philips screws, or attached to the side of the big hose that goes from the tub to the pump, secured by a Jubilee clip, underneath the machine. disconnect the power and remove the pressure pot, in both cases it's a long rigid white plastic tube, from one end of which comes a narrow flexible plastic hose which goes up to the top of the cabinet and is attached to the pressure switch itself. This tube is likely to have a load of muck in it, as its bottom end. Clean this out, and if your element didn't burn out, then everything should now be fine.
