You just do not drop in a replacement hard drive from another working computer and expect it to work. The replacement hard drive is now in a "foreign" environment and often will not work to protect the existing operating system. If you have the operating system disks you may be able to do a "repair" operation where the OS is given a chance to adjust to is new environment and install new drivers. If not, then all you can do is format the replacement unit and re install all of the software; everything is one drive is lost and you start from square one.

SOURCE: WD 1TB USB 2.0 EXT HD - NOT RECOGNIZED

Hi First things first, is the light on the front still coming on? If not try a new power supply or moving the drive to a new shell as the problem is either in the AC adapter or in the shell.

If the light is on it only confirms that you have power, but first try a different set of USB ports and if that doesn't work try a different computer. If it works on the other ports, no biggy, use it there. If it doesn't and works on a different computer then it's likely your registry entry for the device is damaged, get back to me if that is the case. If it doesn't work on other ports or another computer then it's likely the circuitry of either the drive or shell is damaged, take it to a computer store and have the techs swap it into a new shell(about $40). Then have them test it, if it works you're done, if not then it is the circuitry in the drive itself that is damaged and you will need to send it for data recovery if you want the files back.

Send me an update once you have tried these suggestions and let me know how you made out. If you require the help of a pro for the final steps, reply with your country and region and I will locate a reputable facility to assist you further.

SOURCE: WD Elements USB drive not recognized

Try going to Disk Management and see if they show up there.

  1. Click Start
  2. Right Click My Computer
  3. Click Manage
  4. Click Disk Management
If your computer is recognizing a mass storage device they should show up in disk management and you can just assign them a drive letter.

sounds like an MBR or partition table issue - if you need to restore data from the disk I'd suggest testdisk

Your best option is to upgrade to Windows 7. It is free for (I believe all) Vista users, and you can run programs in XP compatibility mode.

Hdd problem

the normal thing it will be to read minus 5 percent from it ...I mean 160 ....to see 150 just about ..the rest it is use for system requierments..and stuff , so ..if you are running like this ..it means that you format it like this ..or you left a part of the memory unformated......or ...there is another possibility if it has any jumpers settings on it ...like at the old ide hdd it might be limmitated from there ..or maibe has other limmitations .
there is possible to be setted to use a percent from each partition for different porpouses ..like system restore ..or else...and it will not show all in the partition propieties..
anyway ...its not a reading problem

Acer 5100 PC

Pretty simple. You'll just need to determine whether the system uses SATA or IDE for the hard drive interface. Many machines manufactured in the past couple of years use SATA, but any 2.5" drive will be compatible providing you have the correct interface. ATA drives for laptops are generally called PATA and if it's such an interface any ATA-6 drive will be compatible.

You might need a SATA driver for the Vista installation, so bear that in mind. You'd specify additional drivers during the setup process.

Good luck.

If Acer screwed up fixing your problem the first time (and it's evident that they did) they are obligated to fix it a second time, and if they cant, they are obligated to replace your laptop.
