How to bypass a high limit switch on a pitco gas fryer

My pilot light won't stay lit. Have replaced the thermopile. Someone had said it might be the high limit and could bypass it to test.

SOURCE: have a pitco fryer, #40c. suddenly, it stopped

I am going to say that the gas valve is the problem here since you have replaced the thermo coupling already.
the pilot valve and the main fuel valve are totally separate ---- it is the thermo couplings temperature that activates the main valve fuel flow. you can double check to make sure the coupling end is getting hot in the pilot flame and if it is I would say that the main valve is at fault. now one little trick that I have gotten to work now and again is to use a propane torch and super heat the thermo coupling tip and then try the main valve -- ( sometimes it just needs a small KICK ). but if it does not work then I would just replace the valve with a new one and all should be good because it sounds like everything else is good to go.
if you are still having problems -- please feel free to write me back here and I will help the best way that I can.

SOURCE: 13 year old pitco frialator fryer pilot wont stay

Hi there.
Check and tighten all wiring connections.
Check the hi limit for continuity across the terminals using an ohm meter, if it has no continuity, you have to replace the hi limit.
Regards.

There are several possible causes of this problem, aside from a loose or damaged wire, which is uncommon. The cause in about 95% of the cases is a thermopile that has gone bad. The thermopile is the small cylinder that is attached to the pilot assembly where part of the pilot flame can contact it. It has a cable or wire going to the gas valve, high limit switch, or both. When hot enough, it produces and electrical current that keep the pilot on and allows the main gas valve to open. This is not hard to replace in most gas fryers and not too expensive. This often starts as an intermittent problem. The second possible cause is a defective high limit. The high limit is a small rectangular device with wires going to the gas valve and a tiny stainless tube that goes through the bottom of the kettle to a sensor bulb, like the thermostat has. These are usually self resetting, but may have a small red reset button. If present check the reset. If no reset, jump the two wires and see if the fryer will now light. If so, the high limit is defective, assuming the fryer is not over temperature. If defective, replace. Do not operate the fryer in this condition as there is no over temperature protection. The next cause is if the oil is too hot, in which case the high limit will shut off both the main burner and the pilot. The pilot cannot be relit until the fryer cools down and the high limit resets. If the oil is too hot, usually over 425F, replace the thermostat. If the high limit trips when the oil is in the normal operating range, replace the high limit. The final cause is a bad gas valve. This is not too common, but the gas valve is expensive and a bit difficult to replace. Check all of the other causes first.

Pilot light will not stay lit once pilot button is not depressed. Replaced thermopile already. Any suggestions? Also don't have milivolt detector. Thanks

Hi there.
Check the wiring, loose wiring terminals can disrupt the current going to gas valve.
Try also to connect jumper wire across the hi limit terminals, if this do the trick, replace the hi limit device before operating the fryer.
Lastly, the gas valve may be defective.
Regards.

I have got lincat fryer j10 the pilot won't stay

Hi there.
Make sure that the thermopile is receiving enough heat from the pilot and if it does, check if the hi limit is good, check and tighten also all of the wiring connections, before replacing the gas valve.
Regards.

Pilot light won't stay lit after releasing when lighting gas fryer

This symptom indicates something wrong with the millivolt system. Start by checking the wires from the thermopile to the gas valve, insuring they are all tight and in place. Check the hi limit thermostat, if you have an ohm meter it should read .1 or .2 across it. With you meter set to dc millivolts, and flame present on the pilot, read across the thermocouple wires (red and white) to see the millivolts generated, with the thermostat off and the gas valve in pilot position you should get approx 600 millivolt plus minus 50. The pilot will have to be on for a minute or so to get maximum millivolts. If the millivolts are correct, hi-limit closed, and all wiring is connected, you likely have a faulty gas valve. If the hi limit reads more than .1 or .2 replace the limit, if you are not getting the millivolts from the thermopile, replace it.

I changed the thermo coupler and the pilot light does stay lit but the burners won't light

If you are referring to a gas fireplace:

  • Make sure the pilot knob is turned from "pilot" to "ON" or it will never run.
  • If the pilot knob is "ON", and the pilot is lit, but the burner won't light, it could be a bad Thermopile. The thermopile is the other safety mechanism in the pilot assembly that controls the burner.

Pilot light does not stay on

Hi there.
Try cleaning the thermopile, it must be free of soot or any form of dirt. Ensure that the gas pressure is sufficient, all wiring connections are tight and the hi limit is good.
If all of these are okay and the pilot still wont stay lit, try replacing the thermopile.

Check and clean the thermopile, it is the cylindrical piece of metal standing behind the pilot assembly.Try also to tighten its wiring connections to the gas valve and high limit. If it does not correct the problem, replace the thermopile.

Pilot light keeps going out! Will not stay Lit.

Check if the the gas pressure is sufficient (as stated on unit's nameplate). Check if the hi limit device is good. Check also if the thermopile (cylindrical metal with two wires standing behind the pilot hood) is receiving enough heat from the pilot flame. The voltage generated by thermopile should be 500millivolts in order to open pilot and main valve. If there is 500millivolt on gas valve thermopile and the pilot flame does not stay lit, you have to replace the gas valve. If the thermopile is glowing red and the voltage generated does not reach 500 millivots, you have to replace the thermopile.

We changed the thermostat in our unit and now the pilot lite won't stay lit!

You have to check the following:
1. Does the pilot flame has the ability to heat up the thermopile? Themopile must be properly heated in order to generate voltage to open the pilot valve as well as main valve.
2. When the thermolpile is heated, does it generates 500 millivolts? If not, your thermopile needs replacement. If it does and still the pilot flame wont stay lit, your gas valve needs replacement.
3. Does the hi limit device has continuity on its terminals? If there is no continuity on hi limit terminals, you have to replace it. One of the thermopile wire passes on this hi limit terminal to cut the voltage supply on pilot valve in case the oil temperature reaches 450F.
4. Check and tighten all wiring connections, millivolts generated by thermopile will not pass on loosely terminated wiring.
